Advise needed keep or not keep,,
I am needing a hysterectomy due to a fibroid.. My history is I have had thyroid cancer ( year 2000) and while undergoing routine follow ups my PET scan showed uptake in the uterous area ..my uterious is about 8 weeks in size. DR. says not to wait take it out.... Question is should I keep my ovaries or have it all taken out. I am 44 years old and my mom recently died of breast cancer and i think it was estrogen type tumor.. I am wondering if i am producing too much estrogen and should have everything taken out. My mom had fibroids also but never had them taken out.. Now that I am without a thyroid and on medications for that.. I worry about now having to take hormones also.. I would appreciate all your thoughts and suggestions.. thanks ann

Advise needed keep or not keep,,
Hi Ann,
My mom, who is 79 now, had breast cancer and had a lumpectomy a number of years ago. My mom has small fibroids and never had a hyst.
When it came to my hyst, my Dr. and I discussed my ovaries and we both agreed the benefits outweighed having them removed since my ovaries were healthy. I was 46 at the time of my hyst and I wanted to go through natural menopause if I was a candidate.
Here are two links that might help with your breast cancer information searching:

Best wishes,
Mary

Ann, I'm sorry for the loss of your mother. My family has breast cancer history on both sides. I opted for genetic counseling then a BRCA genetic test. The test came back negative for defective genes, so I am going to keep my ovaries.

Hi Ann It's a tough decision, and a very individual one, that only you can make through research and discussion with your DRs about your individual risks.
If your DRs are planning to prescribe HRT's if your ovaries are removed, you may want to consider keeping them for now, because trying to duplicate their functions can be difficult. Some women do well on the first HRT they try, but others may struggle for months or years trying to find a combination that will allow them to feel like themselves, as you can see over in our Hormone Jungle forum. If you don't have to go through that, then, knowing what I know now about what's involved in using HRT's (both in effort and expense), I personally wouldn't.
Of course, if your DRs say that either your ovaries are not healthy, or that you are at a very high risk for certain conditions related to hormone production, then you might consider removing them and opting for non-hormonal solutions to relieving your symptoms. Before you choose this route, however, I encourage you to visit the No-Hormone Desert Oasis forum here and get a sense of what the options would be and whether you feel they'd work for you.
If you decide to keep your ovaries for now, remember that you can always opt to remove them later. Often that can be done laparascopically, with very little disruption to your life. You could also try, if your DR approves, a little progesterone cream to balance any symptoms you may have of excess estrogen. You can read more about progesterone and its uses in any of Dr. Lee's books on menopause, perimenopause, breast cancer, etc..
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
s,
-Linda
