Too much iron? When can I swim?

First, thank you so much for having this site. It was a huge help pre-op, and remains helpful during recovery.

I'm at 2 1/2 weeks post-op following TAH. Everything has been smooth, have been recovering VERY WELL with little pain or other symptoms past the first three days back from the hospital, stitches came out at 6 days and everything seems to be healing well.

I have three questions:
I received 8 units of blood over the 4 weeks before and during my surgery, and have been prescribed straight iron pills along with multi-w/iron. I'm wondering if there's a possibility of having too much iron in my system? My poops have been very dark green for awhile now (even when I was severely anemic), which would seem to point to my body getting rid of iron... How will I know if I have too much iron in my system-- is there a simple blood test I should get that will tell me iron levels (as opposed to only hemoglobin)?

When is it safe to do basic yoga stretches?

I had a few days recently where I felt drugged--drowsy/sleepy even in the middle of the day, intense dreams and dreaming while awake (mild hallucinations--the dream and real worlds criss-crossing each other). I cut back on the prescribed iron and things are better, but I'm left wondering what would have caused that. Could it have come from OD'ing on iron and if not, what other cause might there be? (BTW I've taken no meds at all since day 5 of recovery, except for the prescribed iron.)

Thanks again for the site and all of your help and support!

Re: Too much iron? When can I swim?

You can ask that your ferritin levels be checked. That measures your total iron stores. It is quite important to have this checked. Being low in iron stores is not good, but being high is problematic as well.
