Very bad experience with dr & hospital
I had my hysterectomy on 6/30/05, TAH. I was in severe pain and was put on a mophine pump immediately. My cousin who is a nurse stated that I had classic signs of a bad reaction to the morphine and should have been given alternative pain medication. I couldn't sleep and the nurses were very irrate with me. They even stopped coming to my room. I kept freekin' out calling home collect all night long (which was the most difficult thing in the world to do since I was so drugged up). My doctor never came around and when I begged him for something for my aniexty, he stated "We all have anxiety and walked out of the room". Well, I have never experienced such coldness in my life. I told him way before the operation that I was very fearful of the pain, and was even unable to sleep for weeks before the surgery. I told the nurses to get the morphine off me and went to the percocet pills. I guess this helped a little bit with the pain, but my anxiety was so outrageous, I couldn't sleep at all. I begged and begged and the nurses would ignore me even when I told them I was freezing and needed an extra blanket, took them at least 30 mins to come to my room and I did have a 101.6 fever. I cried to myself, but afraid to honkerblonk off the hospital staff or my dr. I have a very meek personality and all I wanted to do was go to sleep, but nobody cared. The 2nd night in the hospital (last night - I was leaving regardless), since the nurses were ignoring me, I walked out to the nurses desk for ice and my pain medication when needed. I was so weird and didn't want to bother anyone, so I started rearranging the chairs in my room. I didn't know how to occupy my time without upseting everyone. My dr came in the next morning and said you are discharged and left. No talk of what to expect or anything. I had no idea and really still don't. I had to get a third refill of the percocet (20 pills each) - 1st prescription first two days, 2nd prescription lasted four days, and when I got my staples out on the 8th day, I asked for another precription, since the Advil and Aleeve did not work many of the times - he said in the 20 yrs he has done theses surgeries he has never had to give a 3rd precription and he thinks I have a problem. I was so upset. I hate taking pills, but I am still in alot of pain. I have never had any addiction, and can't believe he is telling me I have a drug dependency 1 week and 1 day after my surgery. He had the nurse (could have been the receptionist for all I know) take out my staples, and showed no interest in looking at my incision. I have a painful lump in my vein where the IV is traveling about 1-1/2" to my wrist and told him I think I have an infection - he said "oh, don't worry about that" but never even looked at it. I am waiting to see if this gets worse and then I am going to a different hospital ER for them to address.
THIS HAS BEEN THE WORST EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER GONE THROUGH AND EVEN THOUGH I HAVE BEEN HEALING OK (I THINK)...I am trying to figure out how to change doctors right in the middle of my disability claim. He is awful and so was the hospital that I was in. I still cry when I think about how I was treated. Even my mother who has been his patient for over 10 yrs could not believe how he treated me and once I return back to work, will tell him why she would never go back to him. The only thing I am thankful about is that I am okay and my entire family witnessed either the hospital or my doctors nasty mannerism and stated that it was SOOOOO not me and they all had NO compassion.
THANK YOU ALL FOR LETTING ME VENT... I REALLY HOPE THIS HELPS ME HEAL.

Bless your heart! It saddens me that your experience was so horrible. I had demerol in my PCA pump, so I didn't have the problems you had. As for the knot in your arm, I have that. It was caused by the Phenergan (for nausea) that I received in my IV. I also had my hyster 6-30-05, and the knot is still there, and tender to touch, but it is getting smaller. My doc assured me that will go away. STOP REARRANGING! That is too much for you to be doing! Have you considered calling your regular doctor for pain medication? I know that is what I would do. I know it's hard to do, but you need to try to relax to cut back on your anxiety. Chamomile tea would help. I will be thinking of you! Take care!

OMG!!
I have never heard of anyone treating another person, let alone their patient with such distaste and disregard! How awful for you! I do hope that you plan on reporting both your so-called "doctor" and the hospital. No one, regardless of what procedure is done deserved to be treated so badly! God forbid something was wrong ~ the hosp. staff would never have known it until you made your way to them. I know that "I'm sorry" may not make you feel any better, but I do feel that it is truly horrible the way you were treated. Many, many best wishes and prayers for you and your battle. I sincerely hope that your experience doesn't have any negitive effects on your recovery.

I do think that the Dr. and hospital staff need to be reported. I don't know to whom you could report them to, but the least you should do is write a letter to the Chief of Staff at the hospital. You need to quit apologizing for being in pain from a major operation. The hospital and Dr. were responsible to take care of you, right? That is an expectation we all have when we go into the hospital. Their behavior is unacceptable and uncalled for. I hope you get some kind of satisfaction soon so that you can start healing.

You poor thing!
I wish you all the best in your recovery. One thing I might be able to help you with - I had the same thing happen with my IV site as you.. right in my wrist, it felt like they had left a peice of the tubing in my arm, a very hard line about an inch and a half long. I used ICY HOT on it to relieve the pain which really worked well, and used ice off and on. It has now gone away.
I really hope you feel better soon, and find a caring, dependable doctor. Keep your spirits up!

Definitely report them to the Hospital Administrator. Those supervisory people don't know what the people on the floor are doing unless these kinds of situations are reported. I would simply copy just what you posted and send it to the hospital. Though most of it is not stuff you can actually prove, if your report goes along with others that are complaining, it all adds to the big picture. At the very least they should be spoken with and warned that behavior like that towards patients is not the goal of the hospital. I'm sure they'd want to hear your feedback.

I'm so sorry you had such a bad experience. The vein problem you mentioned sounds like phlebitis, a swelling of the vein. Wet warm compresses and ibuprofen will do wonders for it. Call you regular doc for help with the pain management, and make sure you mention your experiences to him. Make sure you report the nurses to the hospital's nursing supervisor. Each state also has a medical licensing board to which you can file complaints about the doctor as well as the nurses. Your regular doc can also help you find someone else to help manage your recovery from your hyst. Best wishes with your recovery!

Sounds like phlebitis to me too. It's from the antibiotics in your IV, it can irritate the valves in your veins and cause inflammation. Warm compresses through out the day will help, however this can last for months but most of the time it will go away. I'm a phlebotomis so i know a little about veins. I hope you feel better soon and have a quick recovery.

What a nightmare...
...for you. I had the morphine drip too. It made me nausous (sp?) and I vomitted twice. They pulled it out and started me on Percocet the morning after my surgery. When I left on day 2, my doctor gave me a Percocet prescription for 50 pills plus a Motrin script for 50 pills. The Motrin is just starting to manage the pain today (Day 12). I called the doctor last Thursday worried that I would be out of Percocet and the Motrin didn't work yet. I was scared to go into the weekend unable to manage the pain. He phoned in a script for Vicodin (qty=30, no refills). I needed it Friday and Saturday, but today think I can finally move off it. Anyway, your doctor sounds awfully callous with his remarks about you needing a third prescription, especially with his quantities being so small to begin with. At least now you are in the loving care of your family. Hopefully, it will be all better from here. If you can, try to save the anger for when your better and just focus on getting better at this point. All that negative energy can't be good. Save it for when you are thinking clearly and then plan your revenge!

OMG.. You poor thing.. I am crying just thinking about you having to go through this. I would most definately report this to whom ever I had to. Sooner or later someone will do something about this. NO ONE should be treated this way and you doctor needs his liscense revoked. God Bless You and I hope that your recovery goes much better than your hospital stay did.
