How long did you use stool softeners
I thought I was passed the point were I needed to use stool softeners, but here I am, and boy do I have trouble. Two days now, and no...results. I've had some cramping in both the left and right side, almost like the cramps I used to get right before my period, which I know it can't be. I've been eating higher fiber every day and drinking lots of water I'm worried that I could become addicted to the stool softeners. Any suggestions? How long did you need to take softeners post-op?

How long did you use stool softeners
I have always had stomache issues and now after the TAH BSO I have major ones. So I do still take stool softens. We all heal differently and at a different pace.

I'm still taking them daily (mostly because of the drugs I have to take for my cancer) but my doctor does not seem concerned about the long term use.

I was concerned about long term use of stool softeners too. When my doc called, I asked if I could keep taking them, he said there is not problem with taking them as long as I wanted. I've been taking 2 a day.

I took mine for about a month. I took two SS at night accompanied by 3-4 prunes in the a.m. for constipation. I finally tapered off the SS, but decided the prunes were good for me and kept them up. I don't think there is any addiciton to SS,but make sure.

I will probably be on stool softeners the rest of my life, due to colon damage from a prolapsed uterus. Two doctors have said not to worry about a "stool softener"-OK for long-term use. It's when a "stimulant" is added to the softener that the colon may get dependent on the stimulation from the laxative. Also, when you increase the fiber in the diet, the stools will bulk up and be firmer; the stool softener makes sure stool doesn't overly harden and keeps the water you drink in the colon for softening the stool. (simplified explanation!) I also find regular long walks essential to regularity.
Take care.

I am taking one a day now. I have to keep watch since they put the construction mesh in me....can't strain or I may get a hernia.
Don't worry about getting addicted to them.

Letting waste sit in the colon for long periods of time is far more dangerous than becoming dependent on stool softerners. I take them all the time, always have. I have a sluggish colon as it is and after surgery I thought I was giving birth, not having "moved" for 5 days! Wow, wouldn't want to go through that again! I do anything to keep everything moving, including coffee enemas occasionally.
