12 days post hysterectomy: When can start jogging?

So I'm only 12 days PO, so don't worry I'm not at all thinking of of doing anything more athletic than waking around my house, maybe outside.

But I registered in the fall for a 10km run in Jasper on April 8. That would put me at 9.5 weeks. At 6 weeks I have my post op check up with obgyn. Is it at al feasible that he would clear me to run? I could easily be ready to do 10k with 3.5 weeks training. Even if I have to run/walk.

Everything says, NO LIFTING anything over 10lbs for 12 weeks. But nothing about aerobic/cardio exercises.

Can I slowly up my walking at least, distance and speed until I get clearance to run?

I kind of need to know cause I'm part of a team, and have to plan for travel/hotels etc pretty soon.

Thanks

Re: When can start jogging?

I'm not a jogger, but I did lots of walking after my surgery. So long as I had no pain, I felt it was safe to walk longer and faster until I got back to my normal exercise levels.

You will definitely need to ask your doctor about jogging. It might have an adverse affect on your internal stitches.

Re: When can start jogging?

I'm a runner, not highly competitive but enjoy 5ks and 8ks. I was released to resume activities gradually at 4 weeks post-op, but discovered bouncing down the stairs made me feel every pull inside. What I did was increase my distance and time walking during the first 8 weeks - listening to my body, and if I felt crampy, I knew I'd overdone and needed to pull back. I was up to walking 3 miles by 6 weeks (that caused a bit of swelling). At 8 weeks I felt good enough to do 3 min walk/run intervals, and I kept my gait at a shuffle to minimize the impact (I still couldn't hop and jump in my cardio class). I gradually decreased the walking time and increased the running time so that by 12 weeks I was able to run all 3 miles and a normal gait, albeit at a slower time. No cramps, no swelling. Still, for me, a 10k at 9.5 weeks would've been more than I could have handled. I opted to skip an 8k at 16 weeks that I normally sign up for; the course is hilly and in the mountains rather than my usual terrain, and I didn't trust that I'd be fully ready.

I think one of the hardest things to accept about this surgery is how long it takes for healing. Even after we're released by our doctors, healing continues over several more months. Continue to walk for your stamina and health, but be aware of your limits and try not to push yourself - you can't hurry healing, and you don't want to set yourself back. When you're cleared to run, give a slow, minimal impact jog a try and build in walking intervals. The mileage might be possible at 9.5 weeks, but I wouldn't venture a guess whether you'll be able to run it all.

If you participate, I'd love to see an update later!
