4 days post op and still no BM..suggestions?
My doc sent me home on 800 motrin every 8 hours and percocet 2 tabs every 4 to 6 hours. She also prescribe Colace...one tab a day. This is what I have been taking. I also eat a lot of fruits and yogurt. I drink nothing but water or green tea. I even went as far as taking a woman's laxitive this morning. Still nothing but the pressure to go!
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

4 days post op and still no BM..suggestions?
Hi I would not take any laxatives without the DR's OK. Using them can make the first BM more painful than it otherwise would be because of the way they work.
I was told to take a Colace at every meal; you might ask your DR if increasing it would help. However, you're not 'behind schedule' or anything... I believe it's about an average 5 days post op when most women have that first BM. So, it might be just around the corner!
Some things that helped me were: warm prune juice (I put it in the microwave); bran muffins; strong black coffee; ice cream; lots of water; frequent walks around the house.
Also, narcotic pain meds are constipating, so the sooner you can back off on the Percocet, the better.
Good luck! I hope you have that first soon.
s,
-Linda

4 days post op and still no BM..suggestions?
I basically had the same problems in the hosp and they gave me milk of mag. to take and it really worked. So after I returned home the feeling of consta. returned and I called my DR and he told me as long as i'm taking the pain meds to go ahead and take 2 doses of MOM a day. And I havent been sick anymore. So Good Luck.

4 days post op and still no BM..suggestions?
Hi Sister!
Did you have bowel prep? I had a two day bowel prep. Surgery on Friday (early AM), and home Monday morning and passing gas but not much else for a few days. On the first Wednesday I was home I had DH get me one bottle of the vile BowelPrepStuff laxative and I took a single one day laxitive dose (four teaspoons as opposed to the whole freaking bottle). By the next day BM's were fine. Of course, if you did not have the two day bowel prep, perhaps a stool softener is more in order... See a Pharmasist or doctor for what might be right.
FLEET! If it's in you and you want it out, drink FLEET! majorly diluted, of course, it's vile stuff! and make sure there's enough TP...
Sorry folks, humour required,
icehawk

I used Milk of Mag before and after surgery. Also I swear each timeI had chocolote it produced a BM (3x). It realy is a natural laxative and so is coffee.

You're not behind schedule so I wouldn't worry. My doctor prescribed Miralax to be taken every day - its a stool softener and "non cramping type" laxative. In addition to that I take a Dulcolax stool softener daily. Both are per my doctors orders, and even with that it took me 5 days (and I had NO bowel prep). the percoset is super duper constipating - even with both those meds my first BM was hard as a rock and difficult to pass (don't push ! just be patient and let it happen).
Hopefully today will be your day !

you are ok, percocet will constipate you. you can take up to 300 mg of colace a day for up to 3 days. if u can just take the motrin that would be best. milk of magnesia, magnesium citrate or any other laxative is ok. i work for surgeons and this is a common problem after surgery. definitely take the colace no matter what to help keep your stool soft.

4 days post op and still no BM..suggestions?
Ok, so it finally happened this morning. I think I did look like that little guy sitting on the tiolet that turns red and green in Serferbabe's post. But, it did happen. I still feel like I need to go more but it is a start I guess. So, should I go buy some MOM and keep taking the Colace?
I have quit the Percocet. I am trying to manage my pain with just the mortin 800. It is not quite as effective but I am not having the crappy dreams or the vomiting from the Perc.

u can just stick with the colace if u have had your first BM. i dont think you need to take both at this point. You made it through the rough part! First one is the hardest, after my mastectomies i took so much demerol i was impacted, now that was embarrassing!
