1 week post hysterectomy: Any positive posts for hope post op? Night sweats and insomnia.

I am one week from, I guess TAH (kept left ovary). I have night sweats and insomnia. Any natural cures recommended? I am getting very depressed as many posts sound dismal. I have suffered years of PCOS and work hard to maintain my weight. I hoped this might help...any positive posts of hope?

(((HideeZ)))

We're very sorry you're having problems right now, but it's still extremely early in your recovery.

It's relatively common for the ovaries to go into shock due to the trauma of surgery, resulting in menopausal symptoms. Have you found our Post-Op Page yet? It's packed with information and articles that address all common concerns, including this one. Hopefully, you'll find this improves considerably as your recovery progresses over the weeks and months ahead.

It may encourage you to know that, being a support forum, ladies only tend to post when they have problems during recovery. Those who are doing well - the majority! - generally don't participate as much.

If you've not discovered them already, please visit Our Hysterectomy Stories and Beyond the Land of Hyster forums, for example, where you'll find thousands of positive stories.

We're sending best wishes as you continue to heal and hope you'll be posting your own "post for hope" in the very near future!

It gets better. Really. I made good progress but felt terrible at end of week 2. The only time I cried as it felt like it would last forever. It got much better. I'm at week 8 now and feeling so much better. Take care of yourself. You will feel better soon.

ETA: my insomnia got progressively better and then went away in week 5. I didn't find anything that helps it except trying not to stress about it. If I'm awake I get up and do something rather than laying awake. Can't help you with the night sweats issue as I had both ovaries removed so I'm in surgical menopause. Night sweats are part of the package deal w/o hrt. Many gals here who've kept at least 1 ovary say it takes a bit for them to wake up.

It does get better! I am at day 15. I had major trouble sleeping for the first 10 days. I've always struggled with insomnia, so I take a prescription for sleep. However, during that time it was as if the meds stopped working. My guess is that it is anesthesia still in our systems.
For a natural remedy try some melatonin. You can buy it at any drug store, or at WalMart. I'd start with 3 mg. Valerin root is another option. A few drops of lavender essential oil on a cotton ball placed in your pillowcase also helps.
Good luck and hang in there!

Re: 1 week post hysterectomy: Any positive posts for hope post op? Night sweats and insomnia.

I had insomnia and night sweats for 2 weeks. I was only getting 3 hours sleep, so doctor put me on low dose of Ambien. It really helped to reset my body. I am 4 weeks post op now and these symptoms are long gone. Just don't be too hard on yourself. It will pass. But talk to doc, you need rest to heal. Good luck!
