When did you start running on the treadmill again?

For those of you past the 6 wk. post-op check-up, when did you actually begin running on the treadmill, or go back to your exercise routine? How did you ease back into it? And how many weeks/months did it take to exercise at the cardio level again?

Re: When did you start running on the treadmill again?

I started gradually building up my running from 7 weeks post-op using "couch to 5 km" plan. I am up to week 6 of it. I have felt no problems with coping aerobically. I figure this is a good way to do it, because after a 6 week lay off in which my body has been busy repairing itself, everything can get back into shape without injuring myself. I am happy with how it is going, and feeling good.

I was running 4miles/d prior to surgery. I've been walking daily since surgery, increasing distance, speed and intensity on a weekly basis. I was given the go ahead at week 7 after my internal exam, to all activities. But I decided to wait full 8 weeks before I start running. I plan on a C25K and go from there. I miss my runs but I'm not taking any chances with this surgery. I walk over an hour daily for stamina.

Re: When did you start running on the treadmill again?

So, I am three weeks post op. I want to do a little walking. Do you think I should try. I feel great. The doctor say I am healing great. I want to do at least a little more walking. Than just the house. I do not want to get fatter. I am very glad to hear that you are doing great. Happy New Year. And a new you.

Re: When did you start running on the treadmill again?

Carolyn, I gradually increased my walking by doing several short walks around the neighborhood everyday. At 3 weeks you should be fine to do this. Just make sure you keep within easy reach of home as at first you might find your body saying you have gone far enough. As you feel comfortable, build up little by little. By 6 weeks, I was comfortably back to my usual 8 km walk which includes some serious hills.

Re: When did you start running on the treadmill again?

My physio told me not to start running til at least 3 months post op and the. To ease back into it. I have been walking for 30 mins @4kmph for over a week now.

I wouldn't start running until cleared by doctor. I too feel like I could run now but I am not going to risk it.

Re: When did you start running on the treadmill again?

I began running at about 6-7 weeks post op. My surgery was in Dec. 2009 and I ran a 1/2 marathon the following May. The key is slow and steady and LISTEN TO YOUR BODY! I felt pretty good all through training, with the exception of some soreness and pulling around the incision on longer runs (8+ miles). I do think, however, that running with that intensity may have inhibited some of the nerve healing around the incision. It took almost 2 years to get most of my feeling back on my abdomen. I still lose sensation when I run over 15 miles.

Since my hyst I have run 2 1/2 marathons, 1 full and I am training for my second full

Good luck!

Re: When did you start running on the treadmill again?

Wow... this gives me so much hope! I'm looking forward to cardio again....in time. For now, I walk an hour a day, slowly. My doctor said I could start walking at 2 wks. post-op. But, I barely break a sweat at the end of the hour. Not the point though. I just feel better moving after all the sitting and laying around post-op.

Love all the great stories of being able to run after this surgery! Just bought new running shoes yesterday. Can't wait to wear them in...in time...

I am a runner as well and was doing 3m/d prior to surgery. I am currently walking 2 miles a day and my plan is to gently increase the distance each week.

After I am cleared to run from my Doctor I am going to try running a short distance one day a week and walk my normal routine the rest. Then the next week if I am feeling good I will up it to 2 days etc.
