My normal uterus wasn't so normal

I went to my Doc for my one week post check up where I was informed I had Adenomyosis

When I had my ultra sound it showed a normal uterus and normal ovaries with one functional cyst, but everything "appeared" normal. At this point I was diagnosed with Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding

My symptoms were two week long periods with lots and lots of brown blood. My period would come every two weeks or so with horrible cramping and even cramping when I didn't have my period.

So low and behold I have an actual diagnosis and feel overwhelmingly validated for my decision to have a partial hysterectomy!

Thank you to my sisters as this site is a wealth of information and support YOU ARE THE BEST!!!

Re: My normal uterus wasn't so normal

I have the same thing as well. It was suspected prior to surgery, but can only be confirmed after surgery is done. I understand the pain very well!!! I am elated that I had the surgery done, and that I am through with the misery. Congrats!!

Re: My normal uterus wasn't so normal

Its funny, I also received the diagnosis of Adenomyosis on the pathology report. All the symptoms I had been having for years (I'm 54 so it's probably been 14 years) I've thought were from menopause. I never ever suspected anything like this...nor did the doctor suggest it. I got my hysterectomy because of fibroids and enlarged uterus.

Re: My normal uterus wasn't so normal

Hello! I asked the resident who attended my dr with the surgery what my uterus looked like after they removed it - I guess I just wanted a confirmation that all the pain and bleeding and cramping I endured for so long was REALLY because my uterus was - well - not normal. She confirmed that my uterus looked like a big solid ball and I had adenymosis pretty bad. I felt relieved to hear it. I'm almost 5 wks post op and to not be cramping for this long seems like a miracle - the healing soreness and pain I have felt was NOTHING compared to how I felt just about daily - I used to feel like I was in labor - even when I didn't have my period.
Hystersisters has been wonderful -- the support here is priceless!

Re: My normal uterus wasn't so normal

I was diagnosed with the same thing except my Ob/Gyn new as soon he took out my uterus that I had it. He told dh as soon as he was finished with surgery. He said my uterus was squishy and spongey and that always means adenomyosis.

He said U/S won't catch it. It can only be diagnosed via MRI.
