How do they choose?

Sure, each case is different for each woman & her care provider. Im just curious how the doctors choose to leave or take an ovary?
If its diseased or a history of ovarian cancer thats obvious-- but me for exanple-- my left ovary is scarred to my abdominal wall. Even so, I would like to keep it & expressed this explicitly to my surgeon.
Yet I have seen here where other surgeons opted to remove an ovary for the same reason.

How do they choose?
How would you feel if you woke up expecting to have 2 ovaries but instead woke up with one?

Re: How do they choose?

I had the same worry and had to leave it at, "if you see something bad, take it (or them)." I had a cyst on one ovary which the dr. drained. Kept them both.

Re: How do they choose?

It is both doctor preference and patient health specific.

Both ovaries were taken for me during my surgery. One had a huge complex cyst on it, and the other, while currently healthy, would probably do the same thing within the next 5 years. Since I was 46 during my surgery, the doc said that all should go...

Re: How do they choose?

My left ovary is also scarred to my abdominal wall but because I insisted over keeping my ovaries, my surgeon left them. He and his resident did discuss taking both because they had some superficial endometriosis on them but ended leaving them because I had been adamant, which might not have been a wise decision considering that a year after my hysterectomy, I found out that my biological mother died of ovarian cancer.

Re: How do they choose?

As far as I know I have both of mine. The doctor didn't want to take them if he could leave them.

Did they separate your ovary & abdominal wall? Or just leave them as they were?

He left it where it was. He said it might cause more bleeding if he tired to separate it. It doesn't bother me and at least they can find that one when I go for my annual ultrasound. The other ovary is floating off somewhere way over on my right side and it is always lots of fun to try to find that one.
