Tired of feeling sick from pain meds

I had my TAH on Wednesday. I had a horrible time in the hospital trying to find a pain med combo that would work. The morphine pump did me in- I vomited twice while on it and couldn't eat. Couldn't tolerate oxycodone. I was sent home with Darvocet and Naproxen. Well, I think the Darvocet upsets my stomach as well. I am sick of feeling nauseated all the time. If I don't take my pill, my stomach feels better but I am in pain. I always take my meds with food. It doesn't help. I had DH look up toradol, because they put that in my IV in the hospital and I felt great. I am wondering if I can try that. I am calling my doc in the morning to see if I can try something, anything else. I can't take this anymore. DH is going back to work tomorrow. I have to be able to function to take care of the kids.

Anyone have any ideas of pain meds that I could try? I don't do well on codeine either.

Re: Tired of feeling sick from pain meds

I am sorry you are feeling so sick from the meds. it would be best to check with your doctor before you make any changes.

I was given Voltaren suppositories at the hospital, they might help until your stomach settles down. Please check with your Doctor

Wishing you a speedy recovery

Re: Tired of feeling sick from pain meds

That Toradol was a miracle drug! I asked if my Dr could send me home with it and he said that it was not something he would take a chance on. It's extremely hard on the kidneys and he wanted to find something less evasive. I had my surgery last Wed. and am trying to just do Naproxen during the day. We will see how that goes today. I wish you well on your journey. Take care!

Re: Tired of feeling sick from pain meds

Maybe consider a scopolamine patch or other anti nausea meds if all the pain meds nauseate you. It would allow you some pain control and its short term for both. Sometimes all narcotics nauseate a person and things like scope patch, compazine, phenergan, reglan, (and zofran but doubt your ins would cover it) are needed to tolerate them. Discuss it with your Dr and see. Also crackers or food with pills might help but I'm guessing you've tried that. Good luck, I hope the pain improves soon so its not an issue.

Re: Tired of feeling sick from pain meds

I talked to my doc's nurse. I am off the naproxen and darvocet. I am going to try 600mg ibuprofen every 6 hours to see how that does. I took nothing before bed last night except a benadryl, and my head felt much clearer when I woke up. It was amazing. I mean, I hurt, but I felt like I could actually function. I can deal with pain, but the nausea and fuzzy head were doing me in. We'll see how this goes. Thanks for your thoughts.

Re: Tired of feeling sick from pain meds

I too got sick on the morphine and percoset. I ended up staggering 800mg prescription ibuprophen and tylenol. I would still have some twinges of pain, but the feelings of being drunk on the percoset went away.
