3mo post SAH: Hormone levels?

Okay, so the only thing removed was my uterus. At my 6 week checkup (actually 8 weeks then), found out I have ovarian cysts. I go back next Wednesday to see what the little marshmallows are up to.

Here's my question--when I'm there, do I ask about a hormone test? I feel like I want a baseline on my raging emotions, letharagy and tiredness, and now my (occasional) fluttering heartbeat, so I know what I can chalk up to recovery and what I need to look at further. Per the checklist, that means too little estrogen, which seems odd considering the ovaries are producing cysts (which seems like it would indicate too much estrogen.) Granted, I am not a doctor (nor do I play one on TV) and I could be so completely off base on any number of my thoughts--just wondering what my fellow sisters thought.

Thanks!

Re: 3mo post SAH: Hormone levels?

In general, I'm not a fan of hormone testing unless there is a compelling reason to do it - it usually doesn't result in any useful information that you couldn't get just by paying attention to how you feel.

In your case, what would be the point of hormone level testing when you know there's something amiss with your ovaries because (1) you have cysts and (2) you have symptoms?

I have not heard of ovarian cysts being associated with high estrogen levels; however, in women with PCOS, for example, they're associated with high androgen levels. Corpus luteum cysts contain excess progesterone as well.

I think I'd wait and see what happens at your next visit. Let us know, OK?

s,
-Linda
