getting off ibuprophen BEFORE surgery

Ok - so at the pre-op scheduling call they told me to get off the IBU 800s. I can take tylenol products up to surgery. This is some really intense pain. I used to have 8 or more days a month pain free, now I am down to one or two at the best... Any suggestions? it was suggested to get prescription Aleve, but doc says no to that. So at night I have my heating pad, maybe i will sneak in a vicodin, but it is the daytime - I work 10+ hours a day and just cannot focus! Any help greatly appreciated ladies!

Re: getting off ibuprophen BEFORE surgery

If heating pad helps, there are the stick on heat patches for pain, name?? For a short time they might be worth a try. I'd check on how much ex strength Tyl is OK and maybe like you say Vicodin or something at home? Is it possible to work from home and take it? Probably not but just a thought. I feel for you, can your Dr suggest any other acceptable meds? Ten days is a lot of pain, I hope he has a better alternative so you can work. Deep breathing only goes so far. I'm sorry you have to wait.

Re: getting off ibuprophen BEFORE surgery

Yikes I agree 10 days in pain is a lot. So is that normal that you can't take the pain meds? My pre-op is 10 days ahead of my schedule too...wonder if that means I will have to stop my pain meds too???

Re: getting off ibuprophen BEFORE surgery

Hi,

Yes, you must get off Ibuprofen. It thins the blood, and you could have serious complications post-surgery. Take your Tyenol with a big cup of coffee or other caffeinated beverage...it will increase the effectiveness of the Tylenol. That's what I was told to do at my pre-op for my migraines.

Re: getting off ibuprophen BEFORE surgery

I had to stop ibuprofen 5 days before surgery.

Be sure to follow your dr's orders exactly because you do not want them to cancel your surgery or you don't want serious complications with bleeding. Talk with him if you have concerns.

Best wishes for a successful surgery and easy recovery.

Re: getting off ibuprophen BEFORE surgery

Ladies!! THANK YOU!! I did notice some caffeine is helpful too. I agree that this is a must and 10 days is nothing when it comes to our blood work. So these are great suggestions, I have heard too, stay on some detoxing green teas, tension tamer stuff, heating pad etc. we dont even KNOW for sure it is andeo, but our suspicion of andeomyosis arose from me never in my whole life having pre mens pain. Then - two years ago, the pain starts in the middle of the bleeding and lasts a few days after-- then all that lengthens into 10-14 days of bleeding and 20-24 days of pain. So we wont know until surgery, but believe it or not, I feel better hearing you guys, sometimes i think it is all in my head and then today i got off the ibuprophen and I am hurting like crazy!! Thanks a ton!!

Re: getting off ibuprophen BEFORE surgery

Thank you starry nite I agree. I do not want to go through another cycle: ironically, my cycle is due 4/11 (i have been bleeding early and long for months and months) so that would put it about 4/4. My surgery will be 4/6. Thank you all for taking care of us new folks and helping us through the questions.

DO NOT DRINK GREEN TEA! I read another poster state some time ago that she had been drinking green tea prior to her surgery, and apparently it also thins the blood, and she had complications after surgery. Just passing on what I read! Hope it helps!
