3 weeks post hysterectomy: nervous about jelly belly - abdominal binder?
I'm 3 weeks post-op. I'm nervous about that "jelly" belly as I have been calling it. I don't feel like it's my real stomach yet. What's an abdominal binder?

3 weeks post hysterectomy: nervous about jelly belly - abdominal binder?
Hi , an abdominal binder is a support that's attached with Velcro worn around the waist / hips. It provides support after abdominal surgeries and hysterectomies. Can be purchased on this website and also at drugstores / Walmart. They help a lot : )

I have been looking at the binder they had on me after my gallbladder surgery, wondering. With that, I had almost identical incisions and the nurse in recovery said it would be a great help. I figured they would put one on me for this surgery as well, but the nurse said they don't do that at this hospital, the incisions need to breath.
I think I might give it a try after the tape comes off and see if it helps.
I'm glad you checked in with your progress. It helps to see that far ahead and know I'll be there soon too!

Re: 3 weeks post hysterectomy: nervous about jelly belly - abdominal binder?
Funny you call it that... it's so common post-op that HysterSisters has given it a nickname and its own emoji, swelly belly It happens because of the inflammation associated with all those internal incisions, and where there's inflammation, fluids gather as part of the healing process. There's an article about it at Tummy Care - Swelly Belly.
As for a binder, the hospital didn't provide one to me, it wasn't part of my doc's suggestions, I didn't get one, and the thought of something around my belly... well, it sounded too restricting to me. Other Sisters absolutely love their binders for the support it gives them, using it while sleeping, returning to work or walking. Opinions are really all over the map! If you're hoping it'll lessen the swelling of your stomach, I fear you might be disappointed. Swelly belly goes away on its own, when it's ready, and we can't hurry it along. My doc predicted I'd start noticing it less around 8 weeks, and he was right. Had a few bouts of it beyond at weeks, but it was usually because I did something my body wasn't ready to do yet.

An ab binder is a matter of personal opinion.. My Dr gave me a binder in the hospital. It held me in & prevented that heavy feeling like my guts were falling put. It felt like it gave my back support. I was more comfortable wearing it when walking. Its adjustable, so can adjust as needed. I didnt wear it at night.
