Cervical & uterine cancer not hereditary??

Me with more questions.

Yesterday while speaking with my GYN, he told me that uterine and cervical cancer is not hereditary; that only breast, ovarian and colon cancers are. Anyone heard differently? I've read posts mentioning family histories of uterine cancer and reducing the risk with a hyst, so I'm puzzled on this one.

My grandmother died of uterine and cervical cancer - but honestly, her whole body was riddled with cancer, and I'm sure it was in the ovaries too. We aren't 100% sure where it started. I have several family members who have had breast cancer and my father has had colon cancer. So I really don't have a clue if I'm at higher risk for ovarian cancer or not.

Cervical & uterine cancer not hereditary??

I'm not aware that cervical cancer has a genetic component. Most cases are caused by the sexually transmitted HPV virus. Risk factors include more than 5 sexual partners and smoking. (smoking doesn't cause cervical cancer; it lowers the immune system, making it harder to clear the HPV virus from your system).

I also agree that uterine cancer is not herditary. From what you've written here it doesn't seem you have a higher risk of ovarian cancer than the general population. I haven't read your other posts- why are you having a hysterectomy? Also -are you trying to decide whether to remove ovaries or not? How old are you? any prior porblems with ovaries? Do you have other health conditions? Does your doctor recommend you remove them? Why or why not?

Cervical & uterine cancer not hereditary??

Hello!
Well my sig line pretty much sums up what's going on with me in the female department: excessive bleeding, fibroids and anemia from the bleeding. I've also been having cervial pain, and have polycystic ovaries due to PCOS.

I'm going for a D&C and hystroscopy on March 26th to biopsy everything, then my doc said we'd talk about the ovaries and more details after he has a look. My TVH is scheduled for 4/21. I can not take any birth control pills or anything with hormones because of a few of my other medical conditions, so my options were more limited. I'm 39, have had 7 children (6 still living) and aside from the fact I feel like my family is complete, my other health issues would really make another pregnancy risky. So the hyst was the decision.
