In Castle - pain meds not working

Hi,

I'm two days out and as you can see from the time I'm awake again at 3:40a.m. They took the PCA away yesterday. It wasn't doing mch for me so I didn't whine about it. Then they gave me a dilaudid but it didn't help. I had to raise holy hannah to get some percoset - but that hardly took the edge off either.

I don't know what to do It's the weekend and I can't get ahold of my doctor. The resident is condescending, as is the nurse but I tell you, this pain is worse than my prior two surgeries. Any ideas on how to get some relief....

Thanks, sisters,
k

What finally helped me was two percocet combined with a shot of toradol. I had wished I could have stayed on that regimen for a few days at home, but I couldn't. Might try asking for the toradol, it helps with swelling and muscle pains really well, combined with the percocet... I was quite happy.

Toradol was a Godsend for me in the Castle. I made sure I got it twice a day. Morning and night.

Don't put up with attitude from the resident or the nurse. EVERYONE has a superior. You are in pain and it is there job to see to it that you are comfortable and well taken care of.

Specifically ask for a shot of Torodal and see if that doesn't give you some relief. It's great at managing the pain. It's a combination of Tylenol and something else. I had forgotten all about that until Gipsi mentioned it.

Hugs to you and let us know how you are doing.

Thanks for the ideas....they said no to Torodol 'cause it can be bad for clots (can't remember if it's a thinner or a clotting agent) and they didn't want to take the risk. They did start to combine the Perococets with Atavan and that seemed to help some. I got a couple of hours sleep after I wrote.

Thanks for listening to me....they treat you like you're crazy when you're the patient...but you're just crazy-in-pain!

It just took me by surprise....

Thanks again,
K

I am glad they listened to you... FINALLY. Glad that you are now getting some relief.

I had forgotten all about what meds they had given me until this post. After the pump was taken out, they gave me a shot a day for preventing clots and had me on Darvocet, (dont' remember how often) and I could have a shot of Tramodol twice a day.

The night nurse, you had to ask her for the shot of Tramodol. The day nurse would come in the morning when she came on duty and ask me..."you ready for your shot?." She was such a nice person! Not just because she had my shot either... LOL

I have sleep apnea and am now (after the hyster) diagnosed as 'difficult intubation'. my throat was raw where they forced in the tube and i started choking everytime i fell asleep the first night. The night nurse -- who was wonderful! -- put a shot of benadryl in my IV line and i was out like a light. There is no way they could object to something like that (its otc!)

Good luck gypsystone! i will say a special sleep prayer for you!

Oh Karen, I really hope you are getting some relief. I had a horrible hospital experience so I pray yours goes much better. It blows me away at how drs and nurses treat patients some times. Good luck!
