Embarrasing question regarding my cervix

Hello!

Im 7 weeks post-op and doing great..my dr said I still have more healing so I dont see her again until my 12th week - and yup no sex lol.

So my question...I dont want to ask my Dr and ive tried to google search and awful pics come up.

I had my cervix, uterus and 1 ovary removed. My question is what is now replacing the cervix? Is it now an open hole where you could feel my intestines hanging?
When I have intercourse, would semen go up and into the area of my other organs (intestines, bladder etc.)

Im kinda freaked - I saw a picture that shows w/o the uterus you intestines now "hang there" and w/o a cervix it looks all open and "freaks me out" ..lol!

Otherwise...Im great - thank you for any replies!

Re: Embarrasing question regarding my cervix

You really need to ask your doctor about how he or she closed the end of your vagina. Most simply sew it closed like a tube sock so nothing can hang down or go up into your pelvis. It is called a vaginal cuff.
I think I know which pictures you are talking about on the web and I haven't heard of anyone having that done to the top of their vagina. I was horrified too when I saw those and wondered about infection and so on. But as I said, in the last 6 months that I have been on this site, I have never heard of that done. Your doctor will be able to give you correct info. A quick call will ease your mind.

Re: Embarrasing question regarding my cervix

I had a surgery similar to yours two days before yours. Uterus, cervix, right ovary and right tube....all gone...and not missed!! :-)

From what my doctor told me about my surgery, there is now a vaginal cuff (??) where my cervix was. Basically sewed the top of my vagina together. That is still not fully healed for me and I have to go back at 8 weeks for him to check to make sure I am not developing any excess scar tissue on that area.

And same here....no sex until it is healed....which is fine because my husband is at basic training anyway so no one here for me to have sex with! LOL

Re: Embarrasing question regarding my cervix

Hi Don't ever feel embarassad to ask a question on this site-we're here to help one another. I'm 5 weeks post op TAH-no cervix. The uterus and cervix are removed by cutting off from the top of the vagina. The dr. then uses a vaginal cuff (the vaginal opening is sewn up) so that there is no hole there. I'm pretty sure that is standard when the cervix is removed ?? How would you know though if the dr. didn't tell you. That would be kinda freaky if it was left open-could you imagine? lol

Re: Embarrasing question regarding my cervix

Thank you all...that makes sense...I did hear of a vaginal cuff.
So when I go for my checkup, I can ask intelligently lol!

To Wolf...that makes sense why she said I wasnt healed yet and if I had sex my DH would feel the stitches...now I understand.

My Dr is wonderful, but she is like a strict Mom and if I ask a goofy question, she looks oddly at me lol!

Thank you Sisters! And I am back at work and feeling great, just tired at times...so happy its over and looking forward to no periods! Woohoo!

This site is fantastic! Thank you again!

Re: Embarrasing question regarding my cervix

Freaked Out -

As Danni said most Drs completely close the vaginal cuff. I have heard of a few that leave a very small opening to allow for drainage but that closes on its own over time.

You may find this article from the post-op section helpful Vaginal cuff what is it

No embarassing questions here and it isn't like you have this surgery multiple times in your life, so how do you know unless you ask.

Re: Embarrasing question regarding my cervix

I had the same worries!
At 5 weeks I had to have an internal ultrasound w that huge wand! I freaked thinking it would tear the cuff..
Nothing. Lol... so I thought hey if that went in and did no damage then my husband should be fine! LOL....
I waited 12 weeks, had sex (akward) but painless and no problems good luck ! I'm sure you will be ok.. my Dr said all them horror stories where not to common.. take care!
