Arimidex and Endo (2008)
Has anyone used Arimidex in the management of endometriosis that persists after complete hysterectomy? After my surgery my menopause symptoms were very mild and were totally gone in six weeks post-op. I'm now considered post menopausal and nine months out from surgery. This past month the endo has returned--same old symptoms--intense pain, bloating, constipation. My physician has recommended using Arimidex to suppress estrogen production. Has anyone used this drug in their treatment?

Arimidex and Endo (2008)
I've not heard of this for endo, Arimidex is used to lower estrogen levels in postmenopausal women, to slow the growth of certain types of breast cancer tumors that need estrogen to grow in the body. You must have completed menopause to take it and I'm not sure what the guidelines for surgical menopause are but natural menopause is one full year without a period. It is not without side effects, but nothing ever is, swollen glands,
bone fracture, swelling in your hands or feet, hot flashes, nausea, bone pain and stiffness, moodiness, depression, sore throat. Since you've had a BSO I would think about doing a hormone test to see how much estrogen you are still producing to see if that is potentially causing a problem. It may even be scar tissue, which can be quite painful. Even doing another lap to see what's going on may be helpful, Arimidex, for the treatment of cancer is generally prescribed for 5 years I don't know how you feel about that, but I think it may be worth investingating all your options.

Arimidex and Endo (2008)
Arimidex is one of the aromatase inhibitors used to treat postmenopausal breast cancer. Aromatase inhibitors are starting to be used to treat endometriosis. You can do a Google search for Arimidex + Endometriosis and find a lot of information.
"Aromatase is a protein in the body that is responsible for producing estrogen. Normally, it is found in the ovaries, and to a much lesser extent in the skin and fat.
Research has shown that aromatase is also found in high levels in the ectopic endometrial tissue of women with endometriosis, which contributes to the growth of their endometriosis.
Further research, has shown that inhibiting (making it less effective or ineffective) the aromatase by giving women an aromatase inhibitor suppresses the growth of their endometriosis, and reduces the associated inflammation. This, in turn, significantly reduces their pelvic pain." http://www.endometriosis.org/aromatase.html
You are considered postmenopausal as both of your ovaries have been removed and thus you were thrown into surgical menopause even if you only had mild symptoms.
If you are not seeing an endometriosis specialist you may want to consider consulting with one, especially if excision surgery will be necessary.
I wish you all the best and hope you see some positive results soon! s

Thanks so much for the information
I was looking through google on this subject and ran across clinical trials using Arimidex in the treatment of postmenopausal endometriosis. From what I read this tx seems to be effective. My physician is a top doc in endometriosis treatment so I feel confident that he is familiar with these studies. He did check my hormone levels but did not suggest (at this point) any further surgical intervention. I have started this treatment on a limited basis (1 month) to see if it relieves the cyclic pain that has returned (with a vengence) since my BSO in December. I'd like to once again say what a valuable site hystersisters is, because just reading through these posts I realize I'm not alone when it comes to dealing with this even after a complete hysterectomy. It is so frustrating and depressing to realize that isn't over...but comforting to know that I'm not alone in facing this. Thanks again for the information!
I will keep you posted on how well this works for me.

Re: Arimidex and Endo
I realize this is old, but am so curious if this worked for you? I will be starting it soon. I had a TAH for a mean fibroid and no prior endometriosis and have been in pain for 5 months since the TAH but, it seemed but the locations of the pain changed. When the surgeon went in for a diagnostic procedure (lapro) she found multiple adhesions and once she started cutting each one was filled with endometriosis. Because I am under 40 she does not want to remove my ovaries, although I have no uterus nor tubes. So they are wanting to prescribe Arimidex and Progesterone. Would love thoughts.
Thank you!
