Surgery Wednesday, starting to freak out...
Wednesday morning is approaching and I'm getting more and more anxious by the minute. I'm finding myself actually AFFECTED by it; I'm very short tempered, irritable, feel like crying one minute and laughing the next. Of course, this could just be Aunt Flo trying to make her way here...she's due to show any time now.
I think the thing I'm most afraid of is the pain. I've had so many surgeries before and every one seemed to hurt more than the other. That, and the ONE pain pill that I can tolerate, which is Darvocet, has been pulled off the market. So unless I just want to take something like tylenol or ibuprofen, I'm screwed. If my pain is bad enough that I'll have to take pain medication, it's going to be something like hydrocodone or percocet--both of which are a guaranteed vomit-fest for me. I spoke with my doc about it at my pre-op and he's going to throw in some zofran for me, but it doesn't always work. So in addition to freaking about the pain, I'm also freaking about puking my guts out afterward. Not a fun time.
I've been trying to get everything ready that I need to BEFORE I go down for surgery--giving the house a good, thorough cleaning, making out a lesson plan so my hubby can take over schooling if I don't feel up to it, getting all the christmas stuff done with--mailing out cards, wrapping presents, etc. I don't know how much I'll be up to doing so I don't want any of it lurking in the back of my mind while I recover.
I don't know what more I can do to prepare, but I keep feeling like there is something missing, something I'm forgetting. I hope it comes to me soon, or I might just go a little nuts here.
Sorry for the nonsense rant here, guess I just need to get things out.....

Re: Surgery Wednesday, starting to freak out...
I remember the days leading up to my hysterectomy. I felt alot like you do right now theres so much running through your head its hard not to feel alittle irritable and unsure. I will tell you though it was no where near as bad as what I thought it was going to be. Ive had 2 previous Csections so I had an idea what to expect as far as pain but was very pleasantly suprised that the pain was no where near as bad as alot of people made it out to be. Dont get me wrong there will be pain but as long as you follow your Drs orders and get some rest the first couple of weeks youll be suprised how quickly youll bounce back. I was off all narcotics within a week after surgery and just on regular tylenol and motrin .
Try to relax do some of the things you really enjoy and take it easy. Youll be fine .

My biggest fear was the pain. I had an abdominal surgery & they took pretty much everything. I was pleasantly surprised at how little pain I had. I started with Demerol in an IV. Ended up with Darvocet, but I didn't need it. I pray you will have an uneventful surgery & a speedy recovery.

Re: Surgery Wednesday, starting to freak out...
I was really freaked out about pain relief as weel after having a surgery previous that I had unbearable pain that I was told wasnt there @@. I too was surprised that I wasnt in as much pain as I thought. I am allergic to almost all of the "good stuff" and lortab/percocet makes me puke most of the time as well. I asked my dr ahead of time to see if I could have phenergan, zofran and benadryl along with pain meds, and I think the phenergan worked best for me. I wish you the best for your surgery and recovery!

Re: Surgery Wednesday, starting to freak out...
I am 7 weeks post op today and pain would not be my biggest complaint from the surgery. The toradol was one of the best things I got for the pain though. You will be on the road to recovery soon and be sooo glad it is all behind you. I was sick for a year and could not figure out what was wrong and all along just needed a hysterectomy.
I feel so much better now. I have a life again.

Re: Surgery Wednesday, starting to freak out...
The pain wasn't a problem for me. I had a daVinci surgery. Yes, I was stiff for a couple of days, getting out of bed took some learning, but it got to be painless within about 3 days.
The Percocet they gave me that first night was useless. I asked for ibuprofen and it worked wonders. I took that for a few days at home - then nothing since.

Good luck! I'm right behind you (and feeling your anxiety even though mine has yet to be scheduled!, probably January)....I just look at it like the pain can't be worse than all that I'm going through now! Hoping and praying everything goes smoothly and we both get our lives back asap!

Re: Surgery Wednesday, starting to freak out...
As many others have stated, I was also afraid of the pain especially since I didn't have any going into the operation. I used the morphine pump during the night because I didn't want to be in pain and wanted to be preventative. The next morning, I waited to see if I would have pain and I didn't. The incision pulled when I got up but that was it. No lingering pain. I was lucky and wish you the same. By the way, if Zofran doesn't work for you to kill the nausea, see if they will give you Stematil. That is what finally worked for me after they tried a number of other drugs.
