Re: Hormones tested anyone?

I had a hormone test to determine if I was in menopause. The way the doctor explained it to me was, 1 is having babies and 22 is menopause. I was a 9. Menopause can happen anytime between 40 and 60. The trick is everyone is different. There is no way to tell when I will be a 10 or a 22.Why is your doctor recommending a hysterectomy?

Re: Hormones tested anyone?

They took 2 or 3 tubes of blood at preop, and my Dr had sent a whole list of things check marked that he wanted checked, but I have no clue if any of it was hormones. If it is neccessary, I am sure your Dr will request it.

Re: Hormones tested anyone?

It wasn't during the pre-op. It was before when we were trying to gather info to make a decision on what to do. One doctor felt menopause was at 51. That if I was that age or later he would wait and see what menopause did to the fibroid and that at menopause the bleeding would no longer be an issue. BUT I was a 9,the bleeding was getting worse, the fibroid was growing, and I was 46 at the time.

Re: Hormones tested anyone?

Having your hormones tested prior to surgery can be a waste of time. Why? Because often one of the reasons we are having issues leading to a hysterectomy is because hormonal issues have caused the medical issue in the first place. For instance, too much estrogen might be responsible for fibroids, hyperplasia, bleeding issues, and more.

Additionally, our hormones levels are not the same, every day, all day long. So one would need multiple tests over a period of days to even figure out what ones level is with functioning ovaries. Besides being time consuming, that would get very expensive.

Plus, numbers might not mean much. According to the lab, your numbers might be considered normal but you might feel anything but normal at that level. Instead, many doctors choose to treat according to symptoms--if and when they occur.

Since you do not plan to have an oophorectomy, removal of the ovaries (a partial hysterectomy would mean you are keeping the cervical portion of the uterus and does not indicate anything with regard to the ovaries), then you why would you need to have your hormones check anyway?

Sorry, but I think your friend is simply worrying too much! Talk to your own doctors to find out what is right for you!
