calling all my acid reflux sisters...
I've had acid reflux for a number of years...it seems to have gotten progressively worse. The truckloads of iron I was on for several years pre-op, and the (minimal) amount of medications I took post-op certainly did not help the situation. I'm resistant to the PPI medications...they provide no relief. I've seen my GI doctor, and we are in the midst of testing to try to get to the bottom of it. And I've already been to a cardiologist to rule out a heart issue (I'm very low risk other than family history).
My question is regarding my symtoms, as they seem atypical. My symtoms are:
1. A frequent, often persistant, overwhelming sour taste in my mouth...bleck...can't escape it!
2. Chest pain mid sternum only, which can be stabbing pain, mild pain or just pressure. It flares with spicy, sour, salty foods, subsides when carefully avoid all of those flavors. It's always the *same* spot that flares up.
3. Only *very* infrequently do I get the classic burning up the *whole* esophagus feeling.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has similar symtoms? The sour taste in my mouth started about a year ago. It doesn't sound like it would be so bad, but it's so unbearable, it keeps me up at night! The stabbing chest pain is very disturbing when it happens, and nearly impossible to prevent, as I'm so sensitive. I've had some relief with natural remedies, but have not found a natural long term solution. I'm off everything that could possibly help now, to prepare for more tests.
My upper endoscopy showed no erosions, so that was good news, but it didn't provide answers, either. Now I scheduled for a Motility Test, and a 24 hr PH test on Monday...oh joy!
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

lonicera, do you take vitamins regularly?
my acid reflux was really awful last year. chest pains that i was sure were heart attacks. i went through all the tests, except the camera capsule that you swallow. i just refused.
but i think i came up with the reason for such severe pains. vitamins. i recently started taking centrum again and the pains started all over again. now that i stopped, my acid reflux is much much better. i can't believe it. i don't think my gastro would never have figured that one out.
just a thought.

I have reflux. I had the taste in my mouth and a dry cough. I rarely got the classic symptoms of heartburn. I also felt like something was getting stuck in my esophogus. I tried Prevacid. Gave me terrible headaches. Protonix didn't work very well and now I'm on Nexium. It seems to be the one to do the trick for me. Good luck with your tests!

I have the nasty taste in my mouth too. I have no clue how to get rid of it. I had an endoscopy done and biopsies and on and on and they did find that my esophagus had alot of damage from acid reflux and a hiatel hernia but I have had that since '99. The problem with the acid reflux was-I didn't even know I had it. So tried Prevacid, Nexium and Protonix to no avail. And I kept getting physically sick from not finding the "right" meds for this. I now take the generic of Zantac twice a day and it seems to be doing the trick but the taste just won't go away!

I had the surgery to correct the valve by the stomach so I don't have acid reflux any more.
I can relate to all those symptons. You know it's bad when the doctor suggest surgery. He knows that I tried every available medication and it didn't work.
I wouldn't hesitate to have the surgery again.

Hi ladies
Thanks everyone for your posts. It's very helpful to hear your experiences. I'm so glad some of you have found relief...and so sorry some of you are still suffering! It stinks, doesn't it. I'm so sick of it!
lunabug...I have the same problem with my supplements. I had to cut out anything that had the slightest amount of acid. A number of supplements I was tolerating fine before my surgery, now really bother me. The Vitamin C in your muti-vitamin might be the culprit.
Sorry some of you also get the sour taste. I've also felt nauseaus at times from it. I wasn't absolutely sure what it was from, so it's helpful to know that others with acid reflux also have this problem. A previous endoscopy showed that I was resistant to the PPI type medicines (Prilosec, Nexium, Protonix, Aciphex). I've tried them all in the past and got horrible side affects (dizziness and constipation), but no symtom relief. My primary doctor said there is a new PPI called Zegerid. Has anyone tried that? I wish I could find a natural solution, as I don't tolerate the drugs well at all.
laf...I'm so glad you finally found a solution. Did you suffer any side affects from the surgery, or was it just pure relief, once you healed? I'm really hoping I can find a non-surgical solution.
I'll post again, once I've had my tests, and met with my doctor again. Thanks again!

calling all my acid reflux sisters...
Hi, had acid reflux for years--twice to hospital with
chest pains...Didn't travel without antacids---Several years back heard a Chiropractor on radio explain how to stop "gerd". Use a tennis ball (used my fist) to
rub from sternum down to straighten out any kinks in the digestive system. It worked!!
For what it's worth, I also use betaine HCL.
We need more acid as we age, not less. The acid you
feel is that from rotting food--not enough stomach acid to digest...HCL and enzymes should help immensely--along with the repositioning of upper g.I.

Hi stardancer,
My chiropractor does that massage of the tummy area that you describe. You start to the left of center, under the ribs, and a little below where the sternum stops. You then massage downward to the right. You continue this motion, below all the ribs on the left, in the same downward, right direction. It's especially helpful for a hiatal hernia, as it helps push it down.
I'm so glad the HCL was helpful for you. I have heard of that helping some people with heartburn, when there is lack of stomach acid. Unfortunately, I can't use it at all. When I tried it, I just refluxed it up, and it flared my chest pain terribly. I've also tried digestive enzymes (same theory), and had the same reaction.
I think I may have enough acid, but it's just in the wrong place!
