Vaginal Hysterectomy
I am new to this web site--was referred by my niece who had a vaginal hysterectomy last year. I am scheduled for total hysterectomy (vaginally) on 06/18/04 including insertion of a urethral sling. My doctor told me that it would be a couple of days in the hospital and 6-8 weeks of recuperation--is this accurate given the experience of other hyster sisters. I have a prolapsed uterus which has caused all kinds of problems and finally required surgery. I am probably one of the older hyster sisters but if I had known then (after having my two children) what was going to happen I would have had a hysterectomy long time ago. One consequence of being older is that I won't have any problems with menopause since I have already been there. Would appreciate hearing from anyone regarding the vaginal hysterectomy. Most of the messages I read seemed to be from people who had the abdominal surgery--unless I have misread the messages.

Vaginal Hysterectomy
Hi Cessna and Welcome to Hystersisters! I've moved your post over here to the Pre-Op forum, which is the place to post questions when you're scheduled for a hysterectomy. Post Op ladies visit Pre Op to offer hugs and support and share their experiences.
I had a vaginal hysterectomy for prolapse two years ago. I also had my ovaries removed, anterior & posterior repairs and a bladder lift at the same time. I think you've got a realistic picture... average stay in the hospital is two days, and six to eight weeks recovery is pretty standard. That's the initial recovery period; complete recovery can take six months to a year or more.
On the menopause thing... it may well be that you won't have symptoms of menopause; however, some women do, even after they've already gone through natural menopause (usually less severe though). The reason is because even after natural menopause, the ovaries are still producing small amounts of hormones, and removing them causes a drop from that small amount to zero, which can trigger further symptoms.
There's tons of great information to be found here, in our Resources directory (just click on Resources at the top of the page), and also in the Pre Op Articles page (open the drop down box up above at the right where it says "More Hyster Sisters" and scroll down to the Pre Op Articles listing).
Good luck with your surgery!
s,
-Linda

Vaginal Hysterectomy
Hi Cessna
I've had a vaginal hysterectory, due to prolapse, with posterior repair and left ovaries. My stay in hospital was 7 days, but that was due to my bladder not working on its own. Wasn't allowed home until I could pee by myself!
After the bladder problem, my recovery has been extremely quick and gone very well. I was released at 3 1/2 weeks to drive, swim and fly from UK to US at 5 1/2 weeks and to do everything else in moderation, of course. No heavy lifting though until around 8 to 10 weeks and then to still be very careful. Do not have to go back for any more check ups, unless problems arise.
Except for pelvic floor muscles still not working at their best, for which I'm having treatment - I've done extremely well.
But you have to remember that every person is different and recovers differently. I do believe a vaginal hysterectomy is easier to recover from and is less painfull.
You do need to take it easy and rest as much as possible after surgery. Even though I recovered so quickly and very well, I still got tired. Even now, I'm still more tired then usual.
I am 44 years young and healthy, so that may have helped in my recovery as well. I take a multi vitamin with iron, 1000gr vitamin C and a zink tablet every day; again that could have helped in my quick recovery.
I do know other sisters take multi vitamins, etc., and have not recovered as easily/quickly as I have.........
Talk to your DR/Gyno, do what she/he says and listen to your body. What ever you do, DO NOT over do it!
Let us know how you get on.
Take care,
Loekie

Had TVH 4/1/04
I had a TVH (total vaginal hyst). They removed my uterus and cervix. I am very pleased with the results and so glad I finally I had it done. You can read about my surgery if you click on "Journals", then click on "view all users journals" and I'm in there under my name. I pretty much describe everything I went through from start to finish. Hope that helps!
