TAH, Back problems, nervous
Hello all! I'm new here and have been reading a lot of posts and discussions. I found out Monday that I need a TAH and found out on Tuesday that I will have it in 3 weeks. Needless to say, I am nervous! The biggest thing eating at me is the fear of the unknown. I have had 2 C-sections and have a child that has had over 25 surgeries, so the surgery itself is not worrying me. It's the recovery!
Here's my biggest question right now...
I have back problems/pain. (Phase I of Spinal Degeneration) I am concerned with being flat on my back for so long during surgery and recovery afterward. I cannot sleep or lay on my back because if I do, I get "stuck" and have to have hubby literally roll me onto my side because I can't move. I will be talking with my chiropractor about it tomorrow at my appointment, but I wanted to ask you all about it.
Do they keep you laying on your back for a long time after a TAH?
Will it be possible to lay on my right side instead?
How soon should they let me get up and moving around?
Thank you all for such a wonderful website and so much helpful information. I've already learned so much in the last couple of days!

I have not yet done my SAH BOS, I am scheduled for next month also, but for what I understand, they try to get you up from bed the following day, so I dont think that you will be more that a day in bed, besides you will be probably all sleepy, but in either case its a good ideas that you mention this to your obgyn and your chiropractor also and see what they say. make sure that you ask all your questions the day of your pre-op, make a list so you wont forget. let us know what they say, ok.

TAH, Back problems, nervous
I had TAH and was up on my feet about an hour after I got back to the room. My choice. The sooner you get up and move the better. I had a vertical incision up through my belly button so I laid down a lot over the weeks that followed surgery. I never stayed on my back to long. I moved from right side to left side to my back. I also bought a reclining wedge which was a styrophome wedge to lean on in the bed so I could sit upright but not strait up on the bed. Straight up crunched too hard on my belly button.
The changes in postion worked well but I do not have the severe spine issue that you have. I have had low back surgery so I know what it is like to lay down in a bad position and hurt from it.
