Surgery next Wednesday - feeling very sad (children mentioned)
Hi
Reading through other posts, it seems that feeling sad and emotional is normal.
I have to have this total vaginal hysterectomy next week to end four years of monthly visits to the hospital for post ablation/ligation severe pain.
Yes, logically I want the pain to stop, and I know I can't stay on these steroids forever but the though of losing my uterus, and cervix is just really upsetting me.
I know this is something millions of other women have been through - it just feels like that special connection I have to my children will be gone.
Thank you for listening and for understanding.

Re: Surgery next Wednesday - feeling very sad
Hi. Thank goodness you've found hystersisters!!!!! Please feel free to vent, and keep venting. It is likely that you will find yourself teary right up til surgery time.
The feelings you are having regarding the connection to your children is pretty normal too. I felt like I was some how throwing them away by getting rid of it. SO WEIRD. Like the pregnancies somehow didn't happen at all if my uterus was gone. I found the positive pregnancy tests (I'm insane and kept all of them after having multiple miscarriages) and I thought my heart was just going to break into a hundred million pieces. Does that sound familiar at all? It may or may not.
I know that every woman reacts differently to this surgery, and how we will feel afterwards is a crap shoot. One of my biggest worries was that I was going to wake up, be slapped in the face by some overwhelming "emptiness" and feel sad and lost without it. That absolutely did not happen. Perhaps it was the drugs, or the immediate pain...but I'm not on drugs now and I feel a TRILLION times better than I've felt in YEARS, and I still haven't had a "awwwww" moment over not having my uterus. My kids are still here, and I'm still Mommed every few minutes for something.
I hope you experience something along the same lines.
But for now- please know- your feelings ARE normal. And even if afterwards you do feel sad...we'll be here then, too!
Hang in there. You have one week to go and this horrible anticipation is going to be over with. I have never been so relieved to have something overwith!
Welcome!

Re: Surgery next Wednesday - feeling very sad
Hi hsnz
I felt a bit sad about this, too, but I felt better when I stopped thinking of it as "growing my children in my uterus" and began thinking of it as "growing my children beneath my heart." My heart is still there, so that helped me.
I'm glad you found us here. A hysterectomy can take you on a ride, and it's nice to have others around who have been on the ride already, to hold our hands and share their experiences.
