10 days post-op and getting brand new pains

I'm 10 days out of surgery, saw my doctor for a one week check up and he said everything looked great. This morning I started getting these sharp cramping pains, similar to the horrible menstrual cramps that were the pushing force for the surgery. I've had 5 of these sharp pains in 9 hours, definitely not as bad on that basis as my monthly cramps were, but they still really hurt.

Last night was also the first night I switched from Percocet to Lortab for pain, so is this maybe my body adjusting to that?

Should I go to the ER? I would call my doctor but I know that he's out of town for the next week. I put my body through all of this so that the pain would stop, I can't have something else be wrong now.

Re: 10 days post-op and getting brand new pains

I had a really bad day on day 8 post op. Our symptoms sound pretty similar - sharp shooting pains (enough to make me curl up in pain) through out the day, feeling really lousy in general. For me, turns out it was just gas. Seriously?? Just gas?? Holy mother of God, I never thought gas could hurt so bad! But, when in doubt, go to the doctor/er, whatever you need to do!

Gas pains here, too. Bad ones. Air in abdomEn takes a ling time to be absorbed thru the bowel and let out as the bowel can only handle so much at a time. Heat pad, simethicone, and walk if you can. Feel your pain! Gina

Re: 10 days post-op and getting brand new pains

Same here...gas. I have found that as the healing takes place I have experienced pains in different places of my abdomen area. Pulling sensations just under my skin, unusual sensations low in my pelvic area, all sorts of new feelings.

My doctor said it is stitches healing inside. My first two weeks were great...pretty much pain free. Hope this helps.

Re: 10 days post-op and getting brand new pains

Thanks, it was a rough night but I'm going to try some Gas-X today and see how I feel in a little bit. If the pain gets any worse I'll go to the ER. I have a pretty high tolerance for pain (as I think most women do) so for me to be complaining is really rare.

I had the same, but it wasn't gas, just new pain. It's better now, but I'm 23 days today and still have it, mostly at night. Hang in there!!

Re: 10 days post-op and getting brand new pains

10 days is really early days!

I think you can expect new pains - even apart from the possibility/probability of gas - for quite a while. It's common for people to feel worse in the third week than in week 1, and so on.
As has been said, these pains are part of the healing process, nerves protesting, internal stitches tightening, or whatever they do as they heal. You can get sharp, spasm-like pains all over the abdomen that make you curl up... but they don't last long.

Any pain that does go on or get steadily worse, and doesn't seem to be gas - best to get it checked out by your doc.

We often don't get told what to expect in the way of pain that is "normal". If it wasn't for this Board, I'd have gone to my doc. SO many times from worry!

But I've healed just fine with no complications, and I had a TAH/BSO (manual surgery, with a nice looooooong scar!)

All the best!

Re: 10 days post-op and getting brand new pains

I started noticing my incisions sites were getting red and hot and a little swollen over the weekend in addition to the pains, so I ended up back at the doctors office this afternoon. Since nothing is on the surface it's hard to say for sure but the doctor said that I was at a minimum on the road to an infection. So it will be a week full of antibiotics, checking my temperature and making sure I don't develop any other signs of infections. Hopefully the antibiotics will be enough.

Crystal, hugs to you, surgery bad enough then throw in a complication and it's really rough. I'm emotional anyway about whole thing, my thoughts are with you !! Peace, Gina

Re: 10 days post-op and getting brand new pains

Crystal, I also had infection at the bb incision at week two. I was given a week of antibiotics, but only made it for four days...they made me very sick feeling. On the bright side, the four days cleared it right up. All better and no more issues.

My thoughts are with you. Feel better soon.
