Freaked out about walking into my own Operating Room

I am scheduled for LAVH in two weeks and found out at my pre-op that I actually walk into my own O.R. I have had other surgeries and have always been on a stretcher, in happy land by the time I hit the operating room.

This time, I have to walk in with my IV pole. Anyone else have to do this? Its freakin' me out ........ I don't want to see anything except the ceiling lights

I did this for anothe rsurgery. Its not really that big a deal. Ask your doc if they will be in there with you when you go in--my doc held my hand until the anesthetic took effect--it was really helpful to have someone in there I knew.

I had to do that, too. It was kind of a weird feeling. I wonder why they do that. They wheeled my bed down to the door of the OR, then I had to get up and walk in there. I just said hi to the nurses and my doctor, looked at all the equipment, then crawled up onto the table. It was kind of funny. They immediately put something in my IV and I was out.

Freaked out about walking into my own Operating Room

This was the first surgery where I was awake going into the OR. I thought it was kinda fun. They rolled my bed in and said, please transfer to the operating table.

I remember that as I was rolled in I looked around and commented that I had never actually seen an operating room because I was already out when I got there.

The funny thing was, when they told me to transfer, I asked where the rest of the operating table was. I am a plus size hyster sister and I really could not imagine that I was gonna stay on that table. As I moved onto it though, it was fine. I remember them placing my arm on an extension and then I was in the recovery room.

They must have hit me with the happy juice when I stuck my arm on the extension.

I would find that weird also.

I have always been rolled in and only had to transfer tables 1 time and thought the same thing there also. I was already in "happy land" and really out of it. I grabbed the Anesthesiologist cause I thought I was falling off and just "SMILEDDDD" that sleepy little smile.

Then I was out

I also get the happy juice but it never knocks me out just makes me really relaxed. Here they wheel the bed next to the OR table and I usually just have to scoot over onto the OR table from my bed. I always remember everything right up until they put the anesthesia in, maybe I should ask for a different pre-med or for them not to wait till 20 min before surgery! Hmm.

I had to walk into the OR once..long time ago different place and I didn't like seeing all the instruments and things. Freaked me out a little, so if it bothers you talkt to your doc about giving you something before.

Freaked out about walking into my own Operating Room

I've had two surgeries. The first one (knee surgery), I walked in. I thought it was kind of neat to see everything... but that was just me. I remember it was really cold in the OR!!

But, with my hyster, the anesthesiologist came in to my pre-op area where I was waiting to go to the OR, and I was laying in the bed all ready to go to the OR. He pulled out a needle and said that it was an amnesia medicine which will make it so I won't remember anythign... he put that in my IV... next thing I knew, I was out of surgery.

I WISH I would have asked him if he could wait to give that to me after the OR, because I was really looking forward to seeing the OR and seeing all the equipment, etc. I just think that is really interesting.... BUT that is me.

As for you, Kat, could you possibly tell your doctor that you'd really like to be put out before the OR? I can't imgainge that they'd say no.... the doctors really want the patient to be as calm and comfortable as possible, and if your doctor knew this was a concern of yours, it seems he/she would order for the anesthesiologist to put you out beforehand.... it's worth a try asking... most he/she can say is, "no".

Good luck with your surgery!!!!

I'm with Kat on this one.

I don't care to see all the tools that they are going to use on me, I just want to be asleep before going into the OR.

I would pay extra. I walked in to one OR when I was having a laparoscopy, and just had a very eery feeling about it.

I'm going to ask that they pick my big butt up and put me there themselves!
