My TAH/BSO was Nov. 16th and I never talked to my Dr. about exercise, just asked when I could drive. He said I could drive at 2 weeks. Is it safe to walk this early in recovery on the treadmill?

I had a TAH/BSO on Sept. 21st. My doctor also told me driving was okay at 2 weeks (and I had no problem with that). I was walking short distances, 1/2 way around the block etc.). My DH handled walking the dogs on longer walks. I asked my DR about using my eliptical and he said NO, that he didn't want me bringing my knees up so high (he even told me NO to that until my 6 week check up) and that got extended to 7 weeks because of my vaginal cuff no healing well, PROBABLY because I was trying to do too much! He had to cauterize it. By two months post op I was truely back to baseline and felt great! I probably could have been there at 6 weeks if I had slowed down and allowed my body to heal. Early on in my post op period , some wise hystersister on this site said something like " you only have one chance to heal right! Don't do anything to mess that up!). Wise words to heed! Someone else said something like healing is like setting cement. If you jump on it too early it imesses it up and is never right but if you let it harden you can jump on it all you want and it doesn't hurt it.... more wise words from a hystersister.... A treadmill is probably just fine if you are walking at a slow pace and not elevated it or trying to jog... but you might want to run it by your dr first... Happy Healing and Happy Holidays )

I asked my surgeon specifically about the treadmill, and she told me no treadmill, unless I kept it to under 20 minutes. Her reason was that the impacts are too regular and too hard.

Mine laughed and allowed me to take up "light" belly dancing. Now I know why he laughed. I poop out after the warmups! LOL!! Y'all are inspiring me.

I don't think I would feel secure on a treadmill at this point. I'm just walking my neighborhood and VERY short times. Like 10 minutes! lol!

I don't know about a treadmill, but I walked 1 mile at 2 weeks SLOWLY! I think that perhaps a treadmill would force your steps. on a regular walk, you can time and pace yourself. Take care!!

Hi Meggy,
I was a serious walker prior to my TAH-BSO on Oct. 13th. I "walked" every day from the 2nd day post-op, HOWEVER, the early walking was taking tiny little walks up and down the hall, adding a lap or two each day. It hurt a little, and my tummy felt all jiggly and prickly. I rested in bed after each "walk". By the 4th week, I was walking laps on my driveway. In the 5th week, I ventured out onto my street, and now, going into the 7th week post-op I am walking a couple of miles at a time, but still not as briskly as I did before. I increase the distance a little each day.
The key, in my opinion, is to start very gradually, doing only what your body will allow, and very gently. This will improve your circulation, which helps the healing process, and also encourages good bowel function, which will make you more comfortable. You will sleep better, and be more alert during the day. So do walk, slowly at first, and pay attention to your body. Stop before you get really tired. The very first tiny steps in the hall may hurt a little, so don't try to go far, just enough to move your body a bit, and then go back to bed. If you do this a couple of times a day, it will really help you feel better. Long before you will be allowed to do any ab-specific exercises, walking can help begin the process of getting that tummy back in shape.
I'm 56. If you are younger, you may not need to take it as slowly as I did, but just remember to pay attention to your body and make gradual increases in time and distance.
Good luck with your recovery.

Howdy,
I was walking/ running steep hills with my dog 2 hours a day before my surgery.
In the first week after my surgery I managed a few laps up and down my hall. Week two I was doing gentle walks with the dog around my parents farm. The cows have chopped up the ground quite a bit and I find I have to be really careful even though it is a flat gradient as any uneven surface can be jolting.
Today is day twelve. I am managing to walk around the shops in town (admittedly a one street town in a small rural area). I am managing a good hour to hour and a half walking on the flat part of the farm. The speed is very very slow and cautious like a little old lady. I am 38 and fit but I would be way too nervous of a treadmill at this stage. I'm finding that I feel weak and slightly off balance and I would be way too worried about needing to just not move suddenly.
Take it easy.

Thanks everyone!
I wasn't planning on using the treadmill just yet. I think I'll just stick to walking around stores Christmas shopping!

I found that I could walk around my neighborhood much easier and earlier than on the treadmill. I felt like it was because I could adjust the pace better as I got twinges and pain. I am 8 weeks out now and am walking regularly and just added 3 lb weight workouts for arms. Going slow, but am so happy to be going! At 5 weeks I never thought I'd be this active now, so hang in there!
