Upcoming hysterectomy: Is it normal to feel sharp pain with fibroids?
Hi everyone. I recently introduced myself. Here's the short version: 38 y/o. 2 children. Scheduled for a LAVH keeping ovaries and removing cervix as well as fallopian tubes. I found out that I have an 8cm fibroid that's making me look like a 14-16 week pregnant lady. The ultrasound was performed in August. Do fibroids grow pretty fast? Also, besides feeling a lot of pressure, is it normal to feel sharp pain? Sometimes I feel it when I sneeze. Is the size of my fibroid big? What is the normal size of the uterus?
Your comments are appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Is it normal to feel sharp pain with fibroids?
I do, my pain is between 6-10. I have two large fibroids. They have been this size for 6-12 mos now. My surgery is Tuesday, removing everything. Best of luck and get well soon.
Coughing/sneezing hurt like the dickens.

Re: Is it normal to feel sharp pain with fibroids?
I had multiple fibroids. My largest, which I'd had for at least 18 years, was 10cm when doc recommended a hysterectomy. That had doubled in size in 4 short months after just sitting there at 5cm for apparently most of its life. My uterus with its 15+ house party was about 12-14 weeks gestation in size. Fibroids can cause pain if they're hitting nerves or other body parts where their nerves are. Mine did not, but I had a leaky bladder and loose bowels which I didn't know were caused by pressure on them from my fibroids - both went away after surgery. I could sometimes feel pressure on my bladder when I ran.
Normal uterus is about the the size of a pear. I kept my cervix, ovaries and tubes since everything else was healthy, I'd had no abnormal paps for 20 years and I'm not a risk (personal or family history) for cancer.

Hi Angieyu25 to HysterSisters!
I am so glad you found this site.
Everyone is different, but yes fibroids can cause pain and they can grow relatively quickly. Here are numerous articles on uterine fibroids that may provide information.
You may want to talk to your doctor, especially if this is new or much more intense pain.

Yes! Mine weren't as large as many of the gals here. My doc called mine a "Baby Frankenstein Uterus". I had awful pain, pressure, bladder and bowel issues. I am only six weeks out from surgery, and those issues have already improved!
I am hoping your surgery alleviates all your pains too!
