Enlarged Uterus/ Vag or Abdominal
Hi My name is Deb. I am scheduled to have a hysterectomy on Jan 14, 2004. My concern is that on my ultasound my uterus was enlarged. I then had a D&C and went to my follow up visit . When we decided to go the hyster route I asked if it would be vaginal or abdominal? She said that she would see how large my utereus was at the time of surgery to determine this approach. That makes me crazy not know which one I will have done.
Has anyone else ever heard or had to deal with this. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
I am having the hysterectomy due to excessive bleeding anemia and hyperplasia that came bak on my D&C pathology.
Thanks,
Deb

Enlarged Uterus/ Vag or Abdominal
((((((Deb))))))
Sorry you are having a frustrating time! I am sure I would feel the same way.
My doc was pretty certain he could do an LAVH, but if he found anything unexpected, there was a risk that I would have to have an abdominal incision. The ultrasound should give them some idea of how big the uterus is. If it is much bigger than 10cm across, it is bigger than a baby's head, and you can imagine it might be difficult to persuade it to come out through the vagina without doing extra damage! Your doctor may be uncertain if it is close to that size, as it may fit, or might not! I guess you could ask for a TAH, to remove the uncertainty, but personally I would rather try for a TVH or LAVH first, and not worry too much about the risk of a tummy scar if they couldn't safely do it that way.
If you have had children (I haven't) it seems to be easier for them to do the TVH, but there are never any guarantees, so I would say that what you have been told is pretty standard. Sorry!!
Hope this helps.

Enlarged Uterus/ Vag or Abdominal
Hi Deb, from what I've heard, many drs don't know ahead of time whether they can do a vaginal hyst or not. I'm sure that it's unsettling not to know ahead of time.
Best wishes. Would you please add your surgery date to your profile? That way you'll be included in that day's best wishes list.

Enlarged Uterus/ Vag or Abdominal
Hi Deb,
I went in for surgery on the 15th of Dec. expecting to have a vaginal. My uterus was too large and he ended up doing an abdominal. Before the surgery, in the back of my mind I felt he would have to do it that way. So I guess I prepared myself ahead of time.
But if you have any questions that I could answer, I will try.

DEB~
Hi! Just wanted to let you know what my doctor did and maybe you can ask your doctor about it. When he got in there he found that my uterus was enlarged so he cut it up to get it out and then sent it to pathology.
I have not gone for my post op vist yet bet will this Thursday. I do not know if all doctors do this or what. I will have more info Thursday and will get back to you.
I wish you the best of luck and really the waiting is the worst!!
