Is this normal? 12 days post hysterectomy swollen stitches & odor

I'm 12 days into recovery & today I noticed my stitches are swollen & now has an embarrassing odor. I had a single incision across my navel. Is this normal? Do I need to be concerned?

Juju78,

Are the stitches across your navel the ones that are swollen and have an embarrassing odor? Or do you mean the stitches inside your vagina?

I had a unusual vaginal odor at about 10 days post op, and this is somewhat common. It is the smell of the incision in there healing and old blood. I was concerned and I went to the doctor, but all was well. The odor went away after 2 or 3 weeks. It should be noted that it was a stronger and different odor than usual but not a foul odor. Foul odors should immediately be reported to the doctor, as it may signal infection.

It's the stitches across my stomach.
I ended up going in for a Dr visit.
I was told that after surgery he used a glue to help keep the stitches in place. After about 2 weeks the glue starts to break down & in doing so releases the bacteria that's been trapped underneath. That's what causes the odor. I was very releaved to hear this but wish I would had known. It would've saved me a trip to the Dr.
😊

Thank you for the update! I'm glad it was nothing serious and all is well with your incision.
