8 days post hysterectomy: New development, Bowel movements

I can't believe I have so many questions. Usually I am pretty good about knowing/learning things like this. :/

I am afraid this is going to be a LONG post, please bare with me?

First, the history. I have always had bowel issues, first chronic constipation, then a stretch of about 8 years of "normal" bowel movements, then in the last 10 or so years I have had a combination of "constipation" (more like a backing up, it is never hard or solid) and close to diarrhea. Usually worse for the 2 - 3 weeks surrounding my periods. I would get my period cramps PLUS a similar more focused cramping just before a BM, then a very loose stool, and going 2 - 4 times a day added with never being quite "clean" back there.

GP Doc has loosely diagnosed me with IBS or a gluten sensitivity due to my hypothyroidism.

Jump to now.
I only had my surgery last Monday (14th of Sept), and by the 3rd day I was going like clock work every morning. Still loose, but no cramping (other than gas) and I always felt done!! GP Doc had hoped that a "side effect" of the hysterectomy might be an easy time with my BMs.

Yesterday though I was unable to go and felt gassy but unable to pass gas, and a painful "period pain" type cramp along with mild back ache (not pain, just ache).

I was technically due for my period today had I not had the hysterectomy so chalked it up to that.

But, not wanting to become constipated because of recovery and pain, I decided to have some shredded wheat for supper, and a bran muffin for dessert (PROBABLY too much. oops).

I have just had a BM and it was just like they were after 3 days of nothing. The cramping and the forced pushing (trust me, I tried VERY VERY hard not to push), and the not feeling like I was done. Sort of a combination of child labour and food poisoning!! (The perfect description actually)

The second time I went, nothing happened but the feeling to push and a tiny string of BM.

So my question(s) would be, how much of this is a normal part of hysterectomy surgery/recovery. And how much would be from my possible IBS? Also, since I may have those issues and I AM going somewhat regularly, should I just easy up on the "help" (bran muffins etc) until healed?

TL;DR
I am having crampy painful BMs with the feeling of not being done, and stringy BM. Is this normal?

I did try to call surgeon, but no answer!!? grrrr
