What to expect in recovery?

First thank you all for your support. Your ability to share the good, the bad, and the ugly is supportive to all of us. There are just some things you don't think about when the opportuntiy arises to ask. Having this any time support is miraculous.

Ok so, I am scheduled for a TAH with a bladder repair. I have read alot about recovery and I understand that it is linked to the type of procedure and people have different experiences. However, I was wondering.....I have had 2 C-sections with horizontal abdominal inscisions. Does anyone know if the recovery is similar for a TAH and a C-section?

What to expect in recovery?

Although I never had a C-section, I have had a TAH and I've spent a lot of time on these message boards. Those who have had both, say that the TAH recovery is much longer than the C-section. With the TAH you are going to have many internal sutures along with your abdominal incision.

Normal initial recovery will be at least 6 weeks. Be sure to check out the pre-op info at the top of the page for great ideas for your recovery.

What to expect in recovery?

I agree with what Basketnut said. Never had C section myself. But from what I understand, the recovery from a hyst is rougher. Not a nightmare. After about 2.5 weeks, it wasnt so bad. Six weeks after, I feel pretty good. I would make the same choice again.

What to expect in recovery?

I have had both: 2 c-sections and TAH, My recoveries were similar once the 2 week mark passed as well. The main difference i found was i had sharp pains more often after the TAH than i did with the c-sections.

What to expect in recovery?

JJ33,
Ihave had 3 c-sections and for me the hyster was very similar. Getting up the first time, going to the bathroom etc. The most initial pain I suffered was with my first c-section. I did not have a lot of pain with the hyster and stopped taking all pain meds including OTC within a week. But with the hyster I think it will be a longer overall recovery. I am very tired. I remember being tired with my c-sections, but I also wasn't sleeping through the night. I think having had the c-sections already you are aware of what it is like to have abdominal surgery so you know what to expect. It is not a surprise...that helped psyche myself up for the surgery. Best wishes.

Thanks...

I appreciate everyon'e input and comments. As with all things in life it is the 'unknown' that is scary and causes us worry. Knwoing that I have a point of reference, will help we cope with the anticpation in the next 4 weeks before the 'hyster'.

Thanks again...keeping smiling everyone.
