Staples tearing the skin?
Ok, this might be trivial, but is it normal for staples to tear the skin slightly? I have an apt to get my staples removed tomorrow, so at least I don't have much longer to deal with them, but was just curious?
As a side note, my toddler accidentally kneed me in my incision several times in a row the other night trying to stand on his bed to give me hugs and kisses for bedtime, since I can't yet bend over in his full size bed to hug/kiss him goodnight. Around several of the lower staples it bled slightly, enough to be a little crusty, and consequently those are the couple of staples that have pulled through the skin a little and are causing a good amount of pain to the skin itself. Sorry for the novel, just wondering if this could be normal? One week today, since having TAH removing everything. TIA!

Re: Staples tearing the skin?
Hi,
Mine pulled and tore a bit too. I didn't have a toddler. It was normal for me. After they were out, they healed quite fast. Hang in there. You will be so glad when you get them out tomorrow.

Re: Staples tearing the skin?
Ellea,
No problems on the removal. Had a couple that were stuck to the scab. Truthfully didn't hurt, just tugging. Nurse did them, 21+ of them. I did take 2 advil before I went, as I wanted to be prepared. Had someone drive me. The ones that were pulled have kind of an oval or longer scar, but hey will get smaller with time. Mine were removed at 13 days post op. Then they put on these like steri strips to hold together, and those were on another week, then came off.
Hope this helps.

Re: Staples tearing the skin?
Did well getting them removed, was a little stinging but nothing too bad. The Nurse Practitioner that removed them, however, messed up my incision, and now I have several steri-strips holding the incision together for now. After walking out of her office and just the short distance to the elevator, my hand, dress, dressing that she had put over the incision and my underwear were drenched in blood. I laid flat most of the day yesterday and it's doing much better today.

Re: Staples tearing the skin?
My sister had staples with her first C-section and stitches with the second. She highly recommended stitches over staples. So I was glad when I went home with what I thought were stitches holding my 7-inch vertical incision closed. To my surprise, it was actually just steri-strips. I removed them after two weeks, and my incision healed very well. Interesting how they do it differently different places.

Re: Staples tearing the skin?
I had TAH/SBO and spleen removal on 4-13 and last Friday I went for
2nd Postop check and the asst. removed 4 of 18 staples. More to come out Wed. My discharge papers said short shower daily but doc orders were NO showers until staples out ~ I guess getting them wet until I saw him slowed me down, now they will come out in steps. UGH
