Constipated - Nothing works!

Hi Jen,

I really do feel your pain. Since I had a prolapse, I have been dealing with constipation for 6 months. After the surgery, it took a couple of days...I took a stool softening colaise after each meal (health foods, fiber, lots of water), and then a laxative colaise at bed. I will admit that it was a bit uncomfortable, but I finally went. I began regularity when I stopped the pain meds on day 10. I see the advil/tylenol mix was suggested above. Good call. It really works. Now at 5 weeks Monday, I take one colaise a day. I wish you a speedy recovery!

A big hug to you, Sierra!

Hey,
Get a Fleet enema. Instant relief. Worked for me. I was miserable all day then had that done. Wow, much better.

Oh, Beth! You are so right! Fleet enemas are great...you don't have to strain. They don't empty you out, but the relief is immediate.

Try some plain yogurt with a little fruit several times a day. ALso try a softer diet with less hard to digest items and ease up with the pain meds. At 6 days out your system is still recovering and
not ready for full on regular diet. Take care

Mom

I took the MOM tablets before going to bed & went fine the next morning. The MOM didn't keep me awake during the night. Also your food intake probably isn't as much as pre op so you may not need to go as often. I didn't go until day 6 post op. I have heard also to drink warm lemon juice mixed with water, haven't ever tried it though.

Constipated - Nothing works!

Wow! It is amazing how many foods are constipating and in this post-op situation we should probably stay away from (I goggled "constipating foods"). No dairy (including ice cream, oh no!!), no beef, no sweets etc. I think we are supposed only go to our backyard and graze all day!!

Also, I looked on the PDR website and MoM could indeed be habit forming (my surgeon told me it was harmless). Now I don't know what to do about alleving the constipation. If I drink any more water I will float away! If I consume anymore fiber, you could weave me into a sweater!!

This is definitely something I need to discuss with the dr.

Best wishes.

Hi, I take a liquid calcium/magnesium supllement every night, which helps. I also take a tablespoon of cod liver oil daily. Good luck to you. It looks like you're getting lots of good advice.

Constipated - Nothing works!

I've been having the same problems even with taking 2 colace a day, eating 2-4 fiber choice tablets and drinking enough water to drown a moose! My doctor's office just called me back and he said to continue with the colace 2x per day and to take 1 tablespoon of mineral oil in juice each morning for the next two weeks. Don't know if it works yet, but I'll let you know. Thought I would throw my in.

Good luck with your 'pursuit' for a decent BM!
