Flying 10-15 hours 3-4 months after TAH

I work internationally and my job involves travel. I am about to be sent from Africa to the Philippines. Is it safe to travel on such long flights 3-4 months after a TAH? My first flight will be to Norway 9 hours to Munich then 4 hours to Oslo. A few days later I will fly to Dubai 6 hours and then 9 hours to Manila. I feel well although still feel sensitive. I had a tummy tuck with the TAH so my abdomen is still numb. I am back at work now but am very tired by the afternoon even on weekends. Other than that, I feel well, am eating normally and functioning normally. I just dont want to do anything to set my recovery back. It has been slow but steady. Please share your experiences and advise.

WOW!! What a woman!!! I am almost 4 months out, and, I would think if you are flying business or first class, and, can elevate your legs and get up an walk every one to two hours you would be fine. Make sure to drink plenty of fluids...how about a elastic stocking as well. My main concern would be the formation of blood clots (as it should be for everyone flying). Maybe just a quick check with your Primary Physician to see if he/she has any other concerns or suggestions. Good Luck WonderWoman!!! Hope you have a great flight!!!

Re: Flying 10-15 hours 3-4 months after TAH

Assuming that your recovery is going well, it sounds like you're ready to attempt some travel. It's really not that bad.

I had surgery on Dec. 5th and felt fine to travel transcontinental across North America after 10 days (we had planned for a low-key holiday season at home, but since I was feeling so good decided to make the trek from the west coast for a couple of fun days in Montreal and then visit my husband's family). Then another short trip to visit my parents in California for New Years, no problem.

I travel for work weekly between west and east coasts and have been back at it for a couple of weeks now, with no problems at all.

You mentioned that you are tiring by the afternoon sometimes, so you may want to ease into it (possible to break up your overseas travels into shorter flights?) or test out your stamina on some shorter flights before attempting the 9 hours to MUC.

My biggest worry initially was dealing with lifting luggage, so checked my bag for the first couple of trips back in Dec, but now am able to lift it into the overhead bins without any problems.

Happy travels -- I'm sure you're looking forward to getting back into it!

The other ladies have given good advice. I hope you will be able to schedule in more time than usual for rest and that no one is pressuring you to get too much done. You are probably used to being independent, but this time let the porters and bell hops carry your bags and don't even think about public transport, take cabs or limos. That's what the expense account is for. I would be even more careful than usual about what you eat and drink. I used to travel all the time too and don't think I could have done it at three months. But I'm 60 years old. Bon voyage!

Thanks for all the helpful advice. I am 55 years old and someone has said that the recovery after age 45 is much slower. Is this true? Will the travelling impact on my recovery in that case?
