Stabbing rectum pain when urinating

I don't know if this is going to sound really strange or not, but when I pee, I get horrible stabbing pain in my rectum. The only way I can fully empty my bladder is to get a wad of tissue and put very firm upward pressure on my backside as I pee. Does this sound normal? Could there be bruising there or what? Has the doctor maybe done some damage down there? He said my surgery went very smoothly and there were no problems. (3 days post op LAVH)

I wouldn't wait on this. Please call your doctor. It could just be another wonderful side effect from the surgery that decides to rear its ugly head. Maybe swelling or something. But you shouldn't have to put up with what you describe, normal or not. Plus you must be straining, which is never good. I'm sure your doc would want to know about this.

Re: Stabbing rectum pain when urinating

It does sound like you may be straining a bit to empty your bladder. It may be irritated from the catheter and may not feel like it's empty when it actually is. Have you tried just relaxing all the muscles down there to urinate, rather than trying to make sure you're empty?

I sure hope you feel better soon. Nothing feels normal after surgery and every ache and pain is so scary. Sending to you!!

Kay! Glad to see you made it over to the other side safely!

Sorry about your problem. That sounds unusual. If what Mindy suggests doesn't work, I would definitely consider calling my doctor.

Re: Stabbing rectum pain when urinating

Thanks guys for the responses.

It's a bit hard to know what to do because I was having problems with my bowels before anyway, so maybe something has just been exacerbated by surgery. I mentioned it to the nurse when I rang to book my 6 week follow up appointment and she didn't seem too concerned.

I think I did have a catherter in during surgery, but didn't wake up with one, which surprised me. And if I don't strain, and just let out what comes easily, there isn't the pain. I know when I do that tho, I am not emptying my bladder completely. I know from other people's posts that bladders do react differently to catheters, so maybe I just need to be patient with my bladder and any bruising that may have occured.

If things haven't improved by Friday, I will call the GP. The one I've been seeing is only down here on Mondays and Fridays, and I'd prefer follow through everything with the same doc if I can. It'd be a real pain to go all the way to Bunbury to see the GYN if there's really nothing wrong, so probably better to check with GP first.

Apart from that, I feel amazingly well and wouldn't know I'd had major surgery 4 days ago. Pretty much the only pain I get apart from described in my first post is from wind. I'm sleeping comfortably all night (on my side, thank goodness, cos I have really strange dreams if I have to sleep on my back) and only taking ibuprofen and paracetamol. I don't have much of an appetite, but I'm sure that'll come back. I feel extremely fortunate with my surgery so far, cos I know how much some women suffer and mine has been really so easy!
