Re: Just got back from my pre-op

Glad to see you had a good pre-op. I am 41 and scheduled the same day. Also have bowel prep. Whee!

I will likely be in hospital overnight as well.

Good luck.

You are having a LAVH? I am a side sleeper and slept on my side even in the hospital. I could not get comfortable on my back and the nurse didn't have a problem with it.

Re: Just got back from my pre-op

Molly, the acronyms confuse me. My doctor will be making 3 abdominal incisions for the laparoscopy but will take the uterus out via the vagina. Is that a LAVH?

LAVH stands for laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy. In plain English, you will have small lap incisions and your doctor will disconnect your uterus through those incisions, but your complete uterus will be delivered vaginally.

I had this same procedure (3 incisions, vaginal removal), but my doctor called it a total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH) on my hospital paperwork. That said, the pamphlet that she gave me in the office, that described my procedure says laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy. Don't know if it has to do with how the hospital sets up the OR. As long as they removed the right organ, I was happy!

Some doctors are using some confusing terminology. The TLH is suppose to be done totally laparoscopically with no vaginal involvement, and no work done vaginally (the vaginal cuff can be created vaginally with the LAVH, it is created laparoscopically with the TLH). With the TLH, the uterus is cut into pieces and removed through the lap incisions. That option is not wise for all diagnoses (such as a cancer concern) which can be one reason for the LAVH that allows for the uterus to be delivered in one piece.
