Going home with a catheter post hysterectomy & bladder sling

Anyone else have to go home with the catheter still in? I had surgery yesterday, including bladder sling, stayed overnight with catheter. They took it out this morning and I tried and tried for 4 hours to pee and just couldn't. They did an ultrasound of my bladder, and Dr ordered the catheter back in. Took 4 tries and 2 nurses to get a catheter back in because I'm so swollen! I'll have it in for 5 more days! Someone tell me I won't go insane with this thing in that long!!!

to the Other Side!

You just had surgery oh so recently. Along with that had an additional procedure with a minor hiccup. Your body is trying to figure out what is up or down along with why the massive invasion and trying to find its functionality again.

Take a deep breath. One day at a time. You are not going crazy nor insane. Ice your tummy down as much as you can. You got this. Rest/read the vast information that the site has to offer. *hugs*

You won't go insane. Following my radical hyst., I was sent home with a catheter until my first checkup which was a bit over a week later. They'll give you a smaller leg bag for day (which you can hide under loose clothing) and a larger bag for nighttime. I knew going in I'd be leaving with one and was dreading it. But, it honestly wasn't horrible, although I was definitely ready for it to be gone. It's better to deal with some inconvenience, etc., now rather than risk possible long term issues by pushing things too quickly. My surgery was over ten years ago, and I've had no bladder issues whatsoever. Hang in there!

Thanks so much for the reassurance! I wasn't expecting to have one coming home, just if I couldn't pee. But with my luck I should've known. They did give me a small leg bag to wear. I'm not sure if I'll use it since I'm planning on staying home the whole time. I do think this will help me rest more since I won't have get up and go pee all the time. I'll just have to be careful not to get too sedentary.

Going home with a catheter post hysterectomy & bladder sling

I, too, failed the voiding trial and was sent home with the catheter. I also had a total hysterectomy (robotic assisted) and bladder sling. In addition to those, I had a Sacrocolpopexy. Needless to say, my insides and outsides were swollen, too!

Honestly, in retrospect, I think having the catheter was a good thing, as it allowed me to stay in bed for longer periods of time. Getting in and out of bed was a beast that first week!! And, as Much as I wanted it gone, I got used to it after a while.

Don't worry too much about having it. My surgeon said about half of her patients go home with them, so this is normal.

Hang in there, sister!!
