Foley removal question
So today was my first post op visit. I had radical hysterectomy, lymph node removal and Fallopian tube removal to hopefully cure stage 1b1 cervical adenocarcinoma. No path results yet I had surgery on Friday November 11th and went home with a Foley catheter. Today the nurse removed the foley and had me drink fluids then try to urinate after 1 hr. I did... 200cc! Hooray. Then she re inserted a catheter to see if I retained any urine and I had 125cc. The doctor came in said that was a little too much retention and asked if I'd like to try again so rehydrated and urinated again 200cc again. Nurse re cathed and drained 100cc. Nurse and doc agreed this was good enough. Now to my question. I am continuing to urinate. I feel the urge and a normal amount of urine comes out and sometimes the urge comes back so I sit again. Is this my bladder spasming and waking up?? How do I know if I am retaining too much? I want to drink a lot but need to be able to empty. I am so scared of being recathed and keeping the catheter for another week!!! Any ideas??

Re: Foley removal question
You are doing fine! Continue to drink, walk and maybe set a timer/reminder to urinate every hour or whatever time frame seems good to you. Your bladder needs to wake up and remember to do it's job. You want to be able to feel the sensation of being full, but don't want it to be overfull, if you don't notice it right away. Happy Healing!!

Foley removal question
Thank you for getting back to me! At this point I am worried about every little thing and things are going so smoothly. I woke up twice to tinkle during the night which is unusual for me, but super glad I was able to go. Setting a timer is a great idea! Thanks again.

Re: Foley removal question
Completely and totally normal! I had a catheter for 10 days post op. I'm just over 4 months now and my bladder has just started to settle. It gets much better; I promise!

Re: Foley removal question
It takes time for sure. Mine was on November 8 and I still struggle. Honestly, it sounds like your doctor put you through hell and back inserting a catheter 3times. That's absurd. I would give yourself time and pee when you need to, as often. Maybe don't drink as much. The fact that you urinated should be proof enough that nothing was damaged during surgery.
