Pre-op today - has anyone done genetic testin?

I had my pre-op today and we're shooting for a LAVH if all goes as planned. We decided to leave the ovaries barring any sort of complications. But tonight I spoke to my daughter who got results back from genetic testing for breast and ovarian cancer. Turns out she is predisposed to both. I haven't been tested but think I'll call my doctor tomorrow to ask if he can do that for me, and if we'll have results back before my surgery next Wednesday. If I also have the same results as my daughter, we may want to rethink the leaving both ovaries option.

What do you all think? What would you do? I don't want to go on HRT unnecessarily, but if I'm more likely to develop ovarian cancer due to my genetic makeup, should I just go ahead and have them removed?

The doctor also told me that removing the ovaries does not rule out your chance of ever getting ovarian cancer. Interesting...

I think that yoou should follow your instincts and ask your dr about whether or not you need the testing. It's usually best to be cautious, IMO.

Is it possible for you to have the genetic testing through the lab that did your daughter's test? From what I understand, it is less costly to the second family member being tested.

Also, most people don't know that Ovarian Cancer can still occur even if both ovaries are removed. It is less likely, but possible.

I wasn't aware of that until the doctor told me at my appointment. He is supposed to call me tomorrow and I'll go over all of it with him.

I'll also ask my daughter about the "family discount" for multiple testing. Thanks for the information.
