How long do I have to stand the catheter?
Hi Everyone,
I'm going in for an LAVH/BSO on 10/18 and am worried about the catheter. I had only been awake 10 minutes after my laparoscopy in June before I got them to take it out because it was so uncomfortable. There is NO WAY I am having that thing in all day - I'll go crazy.
Can you ladies tell me how long you had to endure it, or give me a good idea of how to get them to take it out ASAP? My doc says I will have other things on my mind but I know from last time that any discomfort I am feeling will be made 100 times worse! Help!
Thanks!

How long do I have to stand the catheter?
I didn't even know I had it in! I didn't feel it at all. They took it out the next morning. But I am not the one to go on, I had to have it put back in because I couldn't pee. I came home with it. I don't think you will be too bothered by it. I agree with your dr. you will have other things on your mind!! Good luck.

How long do I have to stand the catheter?
I had a TVH and had to keep it in til the next morning around 8. I also had packing in and that had to stay til the same time as the cath. It didn't really start bothering me until later that first night and I begged to have it out but they refused. Take care

re: catheter
Hello, I had my TAH/LSO last week on 9/28. I had to have the catheter in just overnight, and thank God it was there! No way would I have wanted to get up and down to the bathroom the first night. You do still need to get up out of bed the first day, but with the pain from surgery you don't feel like getting up a lot. I had a bad experience with needing a catheter in for a week last year after surgery for endometriosis in my bladder. So I was also concerned about having the catheter in, but I have to say I didn't feel it there and it came out very easy at about 6am the morning after surgery. Try not to worry, I am very glad it is over and very glad I had it done : )

How long do I have to stand the catheter?
Sounds to me like your earlier catheter experience was an anomaly. But, I would mention it when i go for surgery. I have been cathed a lot and for a long time they actually used a child size catheter on me. Catheters come in different guages and if it is too large or they scraped the urethra putting it in are the only reason you would feel it.
I'm hoping for you that was the case and this time will be better. But, mention your previous discomfort to the OR team.
I know I will have a catheter and I am coming home with it in for a week. Not real pleased about that. But, I understand the necessity of it.
Good luck

How long do I have to stand the catheter?
My doc told me that she'd insert AND remove the cath while I was still asleep. I expect to not have it when I wake up in recovery.

How long do I have to stand the catheter?
I was grateful I had one, and I NEVER in a MILLION years thought I'd EVER say that. I was glad I didn't have to get up out of bed those first few hours to go to the bathroom.
I noticed the tube if I moved around a lot. My nurse got me up around 8:00pm the night of my surgery and walked me in to the bathroom to clean up, brush my teeth, etc.. they removed the catheter the next morning by 6:00am I felt I was ready and it was much easier to get up and walk by then.
