Upcoming hysterectomy, nervous I'll feel worse (PMDD, worried about hormone balance)
I am scheduled for a LAVH on April 15th. I have talked to another Dr (in the same practice) and the doctor I currently see for mild thyroid issues and bio identical hormones. The consensus is that the hysterectomy is a good choice.
My biggest concerns are the anesthesia and hormonal issues afterwards. I had a nasal surgery 4 years ago that was very extensive (4 1/2 hr procedure). I had a lot of issues with the anesthesia, including post op pneumonia. I also had larynx damage from being intubated. I had to see a speech pathologist and still suffer from reflux because my larynx doesn't function properly. So the thought of general anesthesia is anxiety inducing.
I am also worried about hormone balance. Right now the plan is to remove my left ovary (it is badly cystic) and leave the right. I suffer PMDD and have tried all sorts of things to straighten it out. Most recently I started bio identical progesterone. It has helped with the physical stuff but the mental/emotional stuff is mostly worse. I am nervous that after surgery my hormones are going to be an ever bigger mess. I don't want to end up in the hormone jungle!
Any encouragement, suggestions, etc are greatly appreciated!

Re: Upcoming surgery, nervous I'll feel worse
Why oh Why, thank you for your response. I am sorry you have had such a rough time. Unfortunately it is not just PMDD. I have excessive bleeding, extreme pain (gotten to the point where last month I fainted 12 times during my period), a mass in my uterus (they couldn't biopsy because my cervix is mostly blocked due to scar tissue from a D&C from a miscarriage), my uterine lining is twice as thick as it should be so they are suspecting adenomyosis as well. My mother had a radical hysterectomy at my age for a melon sized fibroid and cysts. My grandmother died at age 32 from ovarian cancer.
I am not taking any of this lightly. After my nasal surgery I swore I wouldn't have surgery again even if it killed me! After being in horrible pain almost daily for several months, I decided that it is time to take the leap. Still extremely nervous!

Hi Maribella to HysterSisters!
I am sorry you are dealing with all of this, but I am so glad you found this site.
Having a hysterectomy is a major decision, and the pros and cons should be weighed against your current medical situation in consult with your doctor.
I had a TAH BSO for a very large complex ovarian cyst and multiple uterine fibroids at age 46. There was also a cancer concern, and a gyn onc did my surgery. All was thankfully benign. I was plunged into surgical menopause and I was MISERABLE. My GP put me on HRT and it gave me my life back. While not as good as my natural hormones, it was much better than nothing at all. I have not had any other medical or health issues related to my hysterectomy. While I did not want the surgery, it was the best solution given my condition. I would do the surgery again, given the result I had.
Everyone is different in recovery, but most women have this surgery, recover, and go on with their lives without major complications.
I do not know how the PMDD will affect your HRT options. That is something you will have to work in close connection with your doctor. It can take time to get the balance correct.
Regarding the anesthesia, talk to your doctor about your previous experience. I have read some women doing only an epidural with this surgery, although that is fairly uncommon.
Here are 10 Tips for Preparing for Your Hysterectomy to get you started. You may also want to read the pre-op page.
Just know that you are not alone in this, and we are here for you.
