Frustrated - Fibroids keep coming back

Hi everyone -

I'm hoping that someone on here has (or knows someone who has) a similar experience to mine. I'm not sure what my best options are and could use some advice.

I had a myomectomy in 2002 for fibroids. All was good until 2005, when I had a hysterectomy (kept ovaries) for additional fibroids. In September 2006, I had exploratory surgery and had yet another fibroid that was attached to intestines - so the fibroid was removed. My doc and I thought that I ended up with a hematoma (and several of you helped me thru that) about 2 weeks after surgery. Well... I went to the doctor for my 8 week check up in early November - and heard the dreaded words - "we need to do an ultrasound". Long story short - I had the ultrasound, my ob/gyn said that he had no idea what to do anymore as I have not one - but two new fibroids that have grown to a fairly large size (7-8 cm each) since early September, and I'm now seeing an oncology OB/GYN at my local university hospital.

I had my first appt yesterday, and the oncologist (in one statement) - said - we need to do an MRI, come back in 2 weeks for a follow up, then we'll do surgery on Dec 18th. This time he wants to take out ovaries and the new fibroids. He thinks I might have Benign Metastisizing Leimyoma - which is basically fibroids that can grow in non-uterine areas of your body. Apparantly the latest research is that estrogen can cause the fibroids to grow quickly - so that's why the ovaries need to be removed this time.

So - has anyone else here had this? I'm a bit concerned about no ovaries as I'm 37. Not to mention - I'm having surgery right before the holidays! Any ideas what I can expect in the future?

Thanks!

- Kim

The following is an excellent article on all fibroids.....scroll down to find the benign metastisizing leiomyomas:
http://www.ehponline.org/members/200...bboy-full.html

I wouldn't want to agree to another surgery without gathering more information, and getting a second doctor's opinion......from a physician that is not a partner or referral from your original docs.

As far as what life can be like without ovaries, the No Hormone Oasis, or Ovaries Only are two forums where experienced women can offer their knowledge.

I hope this helps...............s.....Deb
