Upcoming hysterectomy 2/17: Any Teachers Preparing for Surgery???
OMG hystersisters who are teachers! Preparing your home, taking care of bills, your recovery spot all done, meals prepped, transportation covered, etc. are all done. But holy cow, preparing lesson plans for up to 6 weeks for 150 14 year-olds...I am worn out from lesson planning & am certainly ready for a break from this to focus on my health & recovery.
In general we teachers hate missing class because of how much work it is to make plans & take care of any aftermath from just a one day absence, but preparing this much just about did me in. I bring much of it on myself...insisting that absolutely everything is prepped & the sub doesn't have to run or create a single thing.
Good luck to all of my sister teachers out there planning for an extended leave!

Ekkk I'm glad I'm on maternity leave and not having to deal with lesson planning on top you poor thing.
It sucks with teaching how time off isn't really just time off aye. You pretty much have to do the work you would normally do right before your leave. Then get back to all the marking.
I was a secondary school teacher before I became a SAHM so I can appreciate your stress levels will be very high right now.
You poor thing. Make sure you relax every second of your 6 weeks off. You've earned a holiday!

It sounds like your students are lucky to have you! I only had to plan 3 weeks of lessons and thought that was a lot

Re: Any Teachers Preparing for Hyst???
Thanks, ladies. It is so great that people are so supportive and those that can relate, respond....very validating. I am hoping not to be out the 5 weeks, but doc thought 3 might be a little too soon given how long our day is & were on our feet for about 90% of it. I also thought it was great of the doc to suggest planning for 5, just so that I likely wouldn't have to think about plans and devote time to it should I hopefully be able to return a bit earlier.
As you both know, that planning is a TON of work and not knowing what I may walk back into is a bit stressful (although I am so lucky, that the 150 students assigned to me are very thoughtful, respectful and assertive about their success in school). This year is one of those years where a teacher thinks, "How did I get this lucky with this group of kids?" They are rare...I have had about 3, maybe 4, of those overall groups in the past 20 years. I consider it to be a sign that this was the perfect time to go through this.
Thanks for you comments & support

Upcoming hysterectomy 2/17: Any Teachers Preparing for Surgery???
Don't go back too soon. After my appendectomy which was laproscopic I went back at 4 weeks and was shocked at how tired I was. I also had to drive an hour each way to school. A hysterectomy is a much bigger surgery xx

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 2/17: Any Teachers Preparing for Surgery???
I teach high school science and I feel your pain about planning. My hysterectomy is scheduled for March 25. I am lucky administration is working with me to give a quarterly exam early, so I can have grade completed for third marking period. I have several extra-curricular events the weekend before my surgery. And an awesome colleague is trading extra-pay duties weeks with me before the surgery. We are pretty broke and count on that money, but I am not going to count on being able to do it for several weeks after I return.
It exhausting leaving detailed plans with lessons that are pretty much idiot proof. They might get a certified sub or not. I am hoping to be out 4 weeks with one being spring break, but I am leaving 6 weeks of plans. I have hyperplasia and have been dealing with extensive problems, so I don't want to wait for the summer. Plus it would be helpful if I could work during the summer.
The saying you only get to heal once should be your new mantra. I am usually in touch all year, but told my co-worker and supervisors not to even call/email me for the first two weeks after surgery. Take care yourself! A few weeks of doing it right now will helpf you later.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 2/17: Any Teachers Preparing for Surgery???
I teach elementary school and I've already been out for 3 weeks for laparoscopic removal of a large ovarian mass and endometrial polyp removal. I get hit by kids running through the halls on a daily basis. Between that and having to lead my class up and down hallways and stairs in a large building and standing most of the day, I really couldn't hurry back to work. Unfortunately my labs came back showing a borderline ovarian tumor and endometrial neoplasia so I 'm having a TLAVH/BSO on March 9. Because it's my second surgery in less than 2 months and it will be very extensive, I'll be taking another 5 weeks off for it. I am extremely thankful that a teacher who just retired from my grade has agreed to be my sub. I get together with her to map out plans but they don't have to be extremely detailed. I'm also filling out all of the FMLA paperwork so these absences can't be held against me during my yearly eval.
Good luck to all of the teachers out there trying to do their jobs ahead of time while at the same time preparing their homes and families for their surgeries. It's pretty crazy-making but this site is a wonderful place to get support from people who understand!

Upcoming hysterectomy 2/17: Any Teachers Preparing for Surgery???
Me!!
My name is Layla. I am having a hysterectomy Wed. Feb. 17th. My friend Melanie sent me here. It is 4 AM here, and i am awake feeling nervous and sad, as well as actually not feeling well as usual.
I will be 38 on Feb 22. I have a 14 yr old son. I have been with my 2nd husband for almost 5 years. I have been teaching English and Spanish for 16 years. I teach at my old high school, and my son is actually one of my students. I adore my job. I also like playing guitar, sewing and quilting, cooking, reading, painting, and travelling.
I never had female issues until about 4 years ago, and they have gotten progessively worse. I ended up with severe abdominal and pelvic pain, heavy unbearable periods, extreme mood swings, stomach issues, severe cramping, very painful acne that scars, and extreme migraines all centering around my period. I forgot to mention i suddenly began gaving not one but probably 5 or so long stray dark hairs in my chin which i of course pluck. Still last ywar, they said my hormobes tested ok. Go fugure.
Last year I had an endometrial ablation hoping to avoid a hysterectomy, and although I now do nit bleed.. all other symptoms are actually worse. Apparently I also now have Adenomyosis. With thus hysterectomy, he hopes to leave one or both ovaries.
So here are the thoughts I keep having. Will pain after surgery be excruciating? Will this help my symptoms and thus even be worth it? Will I still be myself? Will my sex life be as good? Will I gain weight or have a larger midsection? Will this make things worse? How long will recovery be?
A bit more to add at end. I have an SLE lupus diagnosis for about 10 years. Also he will be looking into fibroid or mass during this surgery.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 2/17: Any Teachers Preparing for Surgery???
Well, we have quite a bit in common: same hysterectomy date, a bit nervous, teach English, same potential diagnosis of adenomyosis, fibroids, progressively worsening pelvic pain, crazy mood swings, and I too teach at a school I attended as a student.
Your questions are good; did you ask them at your pre-op? Have you had pre-op yet? If you have had your pre-op and your doc is open to email for questions (most are) forward these to him/her. I asked many of these & here is what I was told:
1. Pain after surgery? Yes. It should only be rough when I awake until they know my pain level and administer accordingly in recovery. I also was given (& filled many prescriptions after my surgery for pain, nausea, constipation & something else that I forget right now).
2. Helping my symptoms & being worth it? Yes. The majority/most severe pain is uterine. Doc believes to remove the uterus (which contains my fibroids) & cervix and not only will the pain most likely go away, but so will the bleeding/clotting.
3. Will I be myself? No, I will be a better self. Doc discussed with me how this pain has impacted my life over the past 10 years and the constant adjustments I have had to make. A better self is coming because after recovery I likely won't be placing those restrictions on my life anymore.
4. Will my sex life be as good? Better. I have had to limit sex because of the pain I suffer just after having it. Sex triggered my pain and I would wind up crying in misery for 20-60 minutes after and then still have residual discomfort. As of the past few months, it has even become less and less because the act of having sex is now painful most times and I can't continue.
5. Gain weight? Probably the first few days but simply because of the amount of fluids they pump into us through the IV. It is recommended on this site to eat light and only soft foods until you have your first bowel movement and then often people comment about how they moved to easy to digests solid foods after that first BM and that they only need a little bit of food before they are full.
6. Large mid-section? I didn't ask this. I'm already large in the mid-section, but according to many posts on this site, expect swelling for a while and during the recovery process, expect swelling at the end of the day as you start to do more. Most report that this swelling does indeed go away but it takes time and that it is swelling (inflammation) not weight gain.
7. Will it make things worse? No, most likely because the pain is primarily uterine and the uterus & cervix are being removed.
8. How long will recovery be? That depends on your procedure. I am having LAVH and have decided to take a definite 4 weeks off of work but could take more depending on how recovery goes. Beyond just the initial recovery, it is frequently posted here that a full recovery is generally felt 6-12 months after this surgery. That seems like a very long time, but that is not 6-12 months of pain, that is 6-12 months to get the point that one says, "Wow! I really feel different and improved after everything I have been through."---I am SO looking forward to celebrating a Hysterversary next year
Sorry for being so long-winded, but I see your nerves (I have them too) & hopefully my answers can help. I look forward to chatting more with you in tonight's thread for us as well as the post-op thread. Good luck to you...we are on the verge of feeling so much better
