PMDD, Borderline PD & Hysterectomy?

I am 38 years old with severe PMDD and was just diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. My tubes were tied years ago. I am currently using the Nuvaring to try to control the PMDD but to no avail and also weaning off Lexapro and starting Lamictal. I go to see my Gyno tomorow. I am considering having a total hysterectomy and I'm not sure if this is the way to go. Does anyone have any information on this or any other advice. My condition is ruining my marriage and the quality of my life. I have seven children, two whom I have given birth to. They all live with us and sometimes I am not the nicest, especially the week before, during and after my period. If they told me things would get better if I cut my foot off I would do it. I am very desperate! Please help!

PMDD, Borderline PD & Hysterectomy?

I had PMDD, too, before my hyst, and hubby has BPD tendencies with his bipolar, so I know of what you speak.

I found SSRI a better route for control of PMDD than hormone balance, which is elusive at the best of times, but your other mental illness may make it more of a challenge for you than it was for me.

I know that once I got rid of my ovaries, I felt much better, not constantly anxious and much more patient and in control of my emotions all the time. Theoretically, removing the ovaries would control estrogen fluctuation, which would in turn control the PMDD, but for some women, menopause can be just as wacky emotionally as PMS. Everyone is different, so it is hard to know.

I have no specific advice, but I want to say I know how you feel. I felt like I was a totally different person when my hormones were out of whack, and I know that if it had gone on for much longer, I may have lost my job, my friends and possibly my marriage. It is very scary and disconcerting, so I hope you will find the help you need.

PMDD, Borderline PD & Hysterectomy?

Julie,
Thanks for your reply. It is comforting to know that someone understands what I'm going through. I went to my gyno yesterday and he wants to try a few different things before we make that big decision. I am also starting dialectical behavior therapy this week and I am looking forward to that. He wants my new medications to have a chance to work as well.

Thanks again, and have a Blessed Day!
Misty
