Now I Have a Pain in My ***
I had the same pain in my pelvic region 2 weeks post op and I used a frozen coke bottle filled with water. I put the bottle in one of my DH socks and keep it between my legs as often as possible while laying down. I sometimes use the heating pad when the ice doesn't help. I still have pain and feel tight in my vagina, but it is getting better each week. Dr. says no intercourse for another 3 weeks, but can wait, DH will have to be patient.
Good luck to all.
Merry Christmas

Now I Have a Pain in My ***
I am experiencing some occasional rectal pain at times as well. It only happens periodically and usually at night either right before I fall asleep or right after. Wakes me right up! It passes with a half hour to an hour and then I won't experience it again for days or even weeks at a time.
I was told that it could be the Levator muscle and that they are muscle spasms! They sure do hurt though!
Good Luck to all!!!

I also experienced some discomfort at my tailbone. It felt like a tightness and pulling. It's been 5 months since my hysterectomy and it's gotten a lot better. I usually don't even feel it anymore. I think doing kegels really helps, not too many at first or it starts to hurt more. Start slowly each day. Ice also helps when it hurts.

in the mix
Just chiming in that I have rectal pain, certainly when sitting and two nights ago enough to get me up sitting on my bidet for an hour at 4AM. The night pain was more dull than sharp but I've had sharp pains too.
There are two ways to do the rectocele repair. I'm not a dr and it is quite possible I'm mistating this, but my idea is that the most common, what I had, is to fold and sew the strong tissue over the weak spot. A less common procedure that some find solves some of the issues we've been talking about, is to use mesh rather than our own tissue to shore up the weakness.
It makes sense to me that the kind of repair that I had would have more associated pain than virtually any of the other repairs. My dr said he didn't use mesh because he wanted to minimize the foreign material in my body; I had a bladder sling put in, which is a kind of plastic, and he implied that was enough internal plastic.
I wouldn't be surprised if the preferred protocol for the rectocele repair changes in the next five years or so as materials continue to improve and be tested.

Nurse Finch, please tell me more about your A&P repair and recovery. I am especially interested because I see you had your repair 8 months after your hyst. My second repair will be 9 months after my hyst. I am wondering how uncomfortable you were, what you did to relieve the pain, what your restrictions are. My first A&P repair was with the hyst and I was all around uncomfortable so now I am not sure what to expect. Did you have standard colporraphy or mesh? I'm guessing from your name you are a nurse. Curious to know when your Dr will let you return to work and if you have any restrictions. I'm a pediatric nurse and spend all day on my feet. Thanks for your help!

Now I Have a Pain in My ***
Michelle, I had standard colporraphy. I had an inflammatory response to the sutures post-op, so my recovery has been slower than usual. I took oxycodone prn for post-op pain for about a week and then Motrin prn and an oxycodone at bed for 4 weeks. I used Premarin cream vaginally twice a week. I sat on a donut pillow, laid down as much as possible with ice or heat between my legs, and only lifted up to 8 pounds for the first 6 weeks. Elevating my legs helped to get the pressure off my pelvis. It seemed that the more I did, the tighter my repair became, it ached from late afternoon until bed. The dr. said pre-op that I would return to work at 4 weeks post-op, yikes. The sutures took care of me returning to work for awhile. At last weeks visit she gave the okay to return to work after the holidays with no restrictions. She said that the sutures remained intact. I can say that this week that I have little to no discharge and more energy, the repair still feels tight and aches when I overdo.
After my hsyt in March, I decided to take some time off from work and enjoy my new husband and new family. (I recently married a widower with 3 teenagers.) I've been taking classes instead. After the holidays, I'll be back on the Oncology floor at the hospital. A lot wiser and understanding of my patients.
Good luck and God Bless.
You're in my prayers,
Candace

Now I Have a Pain in My ***
Michelle, Thank you so much for your response. I live with a house full of men. My husband, and my 16 and 21 year old sons. For the past 20 some years I have taken care of them and now that the roles are reversed they do not like it. But they will just have to deal with it, because there is nothing I can do about it. I went to PT yesterday and it wasn't as bad as I had anticipated. However, it did nothing to relieve my pain. She told me I had two types of pain going on. One from muscle spasms and one from nerve damage. The muscle spasms are thought ot be a product of the nerve damage. So my main problem is nerve damage from the hyst. She was able to address the pain from the muscle spasms with a Tens Unit, but even after 20 minutes the pain from the nerve damage was not affected at all. So my hopes for pain relief from PT are probably limited. But they are ordering a Tens Unit for me to use at home. I am on a new medication called Lyrica and I am praying for pain relief from it. I am slowly increasing the dosage to the amount required for pain relief. Fortunely I didn't have to deal with the nurse yesterday at all. The nurse is just something else. The therapist was wonderful though. She was kind and patient, even though she admitted that she could probably only provide me with limited relief. Some days I think about all the millions of women who have hysterectomys and go on to live normal life and I wonder why I could be one of them. But then I snap out of it and fight to become well. Having a "Pity Party" for myself isn't helpful and I fight the urge, especially when the pain gets really bad. Thank goodness for this board and all the wonderful supportive people on it. Elona

Candace, thank you so much for all your helpful information. I needed to have an idea about what to expect from the repair itself. Some women have said that it feels like an episiotomy but I have had one and I don't think the two really can compare. My revision will be with mesh for the rectocele and standard repair for the cystocele, I am also having some redundant vaginal tissue that has prolapsed removed. All in all I think I will be quite sore for a bit. Good luck with your return to work soon. Please let me know how your first week back goes. Merry Christmas!
Michelle
