Intermittent vaginal burning

Hi all.

I had my LAVH 12/18/15. I had complications after until April 2016, but I've been free and clear of issues (with the exception of the one in this post) since then.

Since last April I've had intermittent vaginal burning. I had an appointment with my surgeon last year and brought it up to him. He tested me for UTI and a yeast infection, and both came back clear.

It feels very much like a yeast infection, but it's not constant. I can go days (even weeks) without burning, and then all of a sudden it just happens sitting here on the computer (like right now). Other times it's really bad after an activity like mowing the lawn that involves a lot of movement and heat from the sun and the equipment (the burning can take almost a week to completely dissipate). My husband and I went hiking this past Sunday, and I was fine all day long. A couple hours or so before I was ready to go to bed it started burning again (this time it was gone by morning).

I don't understand what's going on. There is no one thing that "triggers" it (being overheated, doing 'x' amount of activity, etc). It just happens. Sex isn't painful, nor does the burning ever seem to happen during or after intercourse.

Please tell me someone else has experienced this or knows what's causing it so I can make it stop happening at all. It's very uncomfortable not to mention just downright irritating (pun intended ;-) )

Re: Intermittent vaginal burning

I'm sorry to read that you're dealing with this. I had vaginal burning between weeks 6 and 8/9 post op, and I pegged it to vaginal dryness from a hormone imbalance. What happens if our bodies aren't producing enough estrogen is that the vaginal walls don't have enough moisture, and without that moisture the tissues can become a bit thin and dry out. A couple of articles with more info are Vaginal Dryness during Menopause which explains it and V-Zone Dryness during Menopause for some tips.

I can't tell whether you kept your ovaries or whether you're on HRT. Have you had a well visit with your gyn lately? That would probably be the first step, and it'd be good to bring this up. If dryness is what is going on, it could develop into vaginal atrophy left unchecked, Doctor may want to put in a work order to have your hormone levels checked. From there you can plan a course of action. If you're on HRT, it may need to be updated and/or tweaked.

Re: Intermittent vaginal burning

Hi Cussette,

I'm sorry, I meant to say in my original post that I do still have one ovary left. He took everything else. So I'm not experiencing any menopausal symptoms, and not on any kind of HRT.

I haven't had a check up with him since last August, and he wanted to see me in a year.

Depending on your age this could possibly be normal fluctuations? I am 47 and the burning started for me about a year ago. Like you it was intermittent. I am only 10 days post op so I am lost as to how to track it, but it was happening at the middle of my cycle right before pms I chalked it up to the loveliness of perimenopause.../
