Catheterize hints needed

My di Vinci hysterectomy with bladder sling is tomorrow and my biggest fear is being sent home with a catheter... doctor doesn't mind sending me home with it in place for about 4 days. Can someone with experience share thoughts and what I can expect?

Re: Catheterize hints needed

I had a catheter on for 2 weeks after surgery at home. It does not hurt at all. Just annoying because you have the bag to carry or a smaller one to Velcro to your leg. For me, I stayed home the 2 weeks except for doctor appointments. Also, mentally it was taxing because it was unexpected. Now that I look back it really was not as bad as I thought it was while I was "in it" if that makes sense. Good Luck to you.

Re: Catheterize hints needed

I was afraid of that too - had issues with bladder every time I had anesthetic previously. Dr left the catheter in an extra day at the hospital (they put it in during surgery) - afterwards I had bad bladder spasms and feeling not emptied after peeing but they used a handheld ultrasound to check - and I was emptying enough to go home without catheter. Quickly learned to keep pain meds high enough to ease bladder pain - 3 weeks post op now - and bladder is pretty normal functioning.
