13# weight gain in 3 days-fluids or insulin??

Tues. I weighed myself...had lap. supracervical hyst. on Wed., went home Thurs. night, and I weighed 13# more!

I had to be admitted on Tues instead of surgery day b/c my dr. called and said my blood sugar was too high during preop labs. They started me on insulin and lots of IV fluids and both continued until I went home...never took insulin before except while pregnant... My legs and feet were swollen when I came home but have gone down some and I still am up 13#!

Do you girls gain weight after the surgery or do you think it's the insulin...but this much in 3 days??

Re: 13# weight gain in 3 days-fluids or insulin??

It could be a result of the insulin and fluids. I am type 2 diabetic and it's been really easy for me to regulate.
I was concerned when my doctor ordered that i be given a very small dose of insulin every 4 hours; but, he was concerned that between the fluids and pain medications that my sugars would go up. thank goodness that my sugars remained controlled and the next morning he stopped the insulin. My hands and leggs to feel a little swollen in the mornings, until I start moving around and walking.
Check with your doctor and good luck to you.

Re: 13# weight gain in 3 days-fluids or insulin??

It is possible to gain a large amount of weight from IV fluids but seeing as you also are diabetic you really need to check with the doctor. You do not want to ignore possible problems. Give them a call in the morning. I would expect you should be losing a couple of pounds per day of fluid. I'm not really sure but I doubt you actually gained 13# in two days from insulin. Good luck
