First was excited and now about to throw up
Good morning all,
I am scheduled for a TAH on Friday, March 3 and up until this morning, I was looking forward to the end of this journey being close. I have been bleeding for 7 straight weeks and have felt so tired sometimes that I thought I couldn't lift my head. Everything I have read, everything that my doctor has told me and everything that my friends who have had this done tell me this is right....but now I feel like backing out.... is this normal? Any comments would be welcome...

First was excited and now about to throw up
Like you, I was serene up until the last day and a half and then the reality hit me. I was going to put myself in the hands of others and let them cut me open? Somehow I managed to get myself through the hospital door, with lots of thoughts about "this time next week it will be over," and "this time next week I'll be home." It is very scary to be approaching the zero hour, and I was so grateful for the support I got. My minister had talked many people through pre-surgery angst and was especially helpful in validating my fears while reminding me of my larger goal. Please keep reaching out to people who are kind and understanding and will support you.
Thinking of you,
Holly

Oh, yes, very normal to be nervous. It was my first major surgery so I know this feeling well.
I found that keeping busy, preparing and getting things done at home, helped me not think about it as much.
You might go out and do something special for yourself. I actually went out and bought a few things for my recovery time at home. I also bought a new gown and robe and slippers for after . I got books, magazines, nice lotion, etc. If am going to be a I might as well get ready for the part.
I also helped myself by thinking how this surgery was going to help my health . I have not regretted my surgery and feel great.
Wishing you the best with your surgery and recovery.

Having surgery is a huge event in your life, and there's no right or wrong way to react to it.
Like (((Holly13))) I also tried to "futurize" my thoughts..... "This time next week I'll already be home" and "In 8 weeks I'll be back to work" rather than focusing on "I'll hurt when I wake up in the recovery room". Why? Because I wasn't sure I'd hurt when I woke up in recovery, and even if I did hurt, it's something I'd deal with when it happened. (For the record, I did wake up in considerable pain -- but I got through it.)
However, if you're really starting to feel unsure about the surgery, it's not too late to postpone or cancel. We've had members who have gotten to the OR and called it off at that time! In the end you have to do what is right for you. You can always have the surgery at a later date.

If I were in your shoes, I would try to determine if I was being hit with nerves, or if I was really unsure that I should have surgery. Don't worry about the nerves...If it is the other take some time to think about what is bothering you, maybe give your dr's nurse a call for reassurance. Call up a friend that you trust and go through the parts that are bugging you. If you can't reconcile your feelings, then as MJ suggested there is no harm in postponing.
It is scary for us to give up control to anyone, major surgery is unnerving. I will pray for peace in your heart!

I understand how you are feeling. My surgery is scheduled for March 3 also and yesterday, I actually told my husband "I am not doing this". After talking with me about all the 'stuff' I've had to put up with and reminding me that once the surgery is over my quality of life will improve, I felt better. I'm still extremely stressed out, but I'm just trying to think about how much better things can be after it's all over with.
Try to find someone who can just listen and let you talk out all of your fears and apprehensions. Even if you don't feel like they could possibly understand, at least you will have an opportunity to actually talk outloud about what is making you nervous. It helped for me.
You will be in my thoughts on Friday! Best wishes and hugs - see you on the recovery side!

I'm there tomorrow, bright and early at 6:00 AM. I've tried to keep busy today. I'll be thinking of you on Friday. Hope you find a way to calm your fears. I think it's normal to think of backing out. Surgery is a scary thing. What I would suggest is to weigh the pros and cons of having it done, and see which list is the longest.
My doc actually told my husband after my D&C not to let me change my mind. When I had my last child, by scheduled c-section, we were on the way to the hospital and I freaked, told my husband to lets just forget it and go out for breakfast. It's funny now, but it certainly wasn't at the time.
Good luck and We'll meet again on the recovery side!

I HAVE to do this and I am ready. I guess it is just preop nerves. I am very active and can't stand the idea of being incapicated for any legnth of time....but I will just have to get over it won't I????? Thanks again to everyone
